Manufacturer's Description

The Philips 26PF5321/10 26-inch HDTV-ready flat-panel LCD TV is more than just great looks. The 11.4cm thick display provides an excellent audio/visual experience with features like Crystal Clear III, Active Control, Virtual Dolby Surround, and unique flat speakers. The high-definition (HD tuner not included) ready, 1,366 x 768 WXGA LCD panel uses the latest panel technology, such as Philips' proprietary Crystal Clear package of innovations featuring a 3D digital comb filter (eliminates dot crawl and colour bleeding, enhancing fine detail, cleaning up image outlines, and removing most extraneous colours), Dynamic Contrast for deep blacks and pure whites, and green and blue colour enhancement. The 8-millisecond response time means it's capable of handling fast-moving action without image blur or lag.

LCD WXGA display, 1366 x 768p
This WXGA display with state-of-the-art LCD screen technology gives you widescreen HD resolution of 1366 x 768p pixels. It produces brilliant flicker-free progressive scan pictures with optimum brightness and superb colours. This vibrant and sharp image will provide you with an enhanced viewing experience.

HD Ready
Enjoy the exceptional picture quality of a true High Definition TV signal and be fully prepared for HD sources like HDTV broadcast, Blu-ray DVD or HDVD. HD ready is a protected label that offers picture quality beyond that of progressive scan. It conforms to strict standards laid out by EICTA to offer an HD screen that displays the benefits of resolution and picture quality of a High Definition TV signal. It has a universal connection for both analogue YPbPr and uncompressed Digital connection of DVI or HDMI, supporting HDCP. It can display 720p, and 1080i signals at 50 and 60Hz.

Digital Crystal Clear
Digital Crystal Clear is a package of picture innovations that digitally adjusts and optimises picture quality to optimal contrast, colour and sharpness levels. It's like watching vivid cinema-like images.

Dynamic contrast enhancer
You want the LCD flat display with the highest contrast and most vibrant images even at wide viewing angle. The Philips dynamic contrast enhancer uses video processing and unique dimming backlight technology. This delivers deep rich black levels with increased detail. The dimming backlight increases the contrast up to 5 times*, and at the same time improves the viewing angle. It gives a bright, lifelike picture with high contrast and vibrant colours, (* factor between 2 and 5, screen type and picture content dependant).

3D combfilter
The 3D comb filter separates brightness and colour signals better in 3D domain to eliminate cross-colour, cross-luminance and dot-crawl distortion. The 3D digital comb filter performs field-by-field comparisons of the television image to accurately separate the colour from the black-and-white information and remove both horizontally and vertically hanging dots, as well as dot crawl. The result is a razor sharp image.

Virtual dolby surround
Virtual Dolby Surround is a processing technology for enhancing surround sound effects. Built-in flat speakers (5 watts per channel) sit on either side of the LCD WXGA Active Matrix TFT screen, giving you full stereo sound without needing to connect to an external speaker system. Virtual Dolby Surround sound support simulates cinema surround sound effects without the need for rear speakers. Philips' Smart Listening auto volume leveling eliminates drastic volume spikes while changing channels or when channels go to a commercial break.

Multiple PiP Modes
Multiple Picture-in-Picture modes allow you to simultaneously watch two video sources either picturein-picture, side by side, or in a mosaic-view with still images.

HDMI input
HDMI makes an uncompressed digital RGB connection from the source to the screen. By eliminating any conversion to an analogue signal, it delivers an unblemished image. The non-degraded signal delivers reduced flicker and leads to a clearer picture. HDMI will intelligently communicate the highest output resolution with the source device. The HDMI input is fully backward compatible with DVI sources but includes digital audio. HDMI uses HDCP copy protection.

Want to do more than just watch TV? The 26PF5321/10 has two rear SCART sockets, two HDMI connectors and a component input that helps minimize digital and line-scan artifacts during DVD playback. And, because the TV is progressive scan, it can take advantage of the more film-like images produced by progressive-scan DVD players.

    Great TV for the Price4
My first experience with LCD TV was a JVC which died on me 3 weeks after the manufacturer's warranty expired so I was sorely tempted to return to good old CRT. However this Philips caught my eye so I decided to give the technology another try and I am very glad I did. The picture quality is excellent, the virtual Dolby surround sound is a reasonable alternative to a home theatre kit and the remote control unit is a work of art in its own right - small, thin yet perfectly conceived.

My previous TV automatically identified the screen ratios being broadcast and switched configuration automatically. With the Philips this needs to be done manually. This is a minor irritation but significant enough for me not to be able to award 5 stars for what is otherwise an excellent television.

    Good picture and very versatile5
Have had this model for about 1 month and am very pleased with its performance. Excellent, clear picture and outstanding contrast ratio. Very versatile (can be used in France as it will receive SECAM as well as PAL, important to us as we will be moving there soon), with PC, etc.

Had no problem with screen ratio autoswitching so the problems reported by another reviewer may be the result of a fault. Note also that some analogue transmissions do not carry an autoswitching signal, although all digital channels should be OK.

Poor quality but better than most LCDs3
I'm really not sure why people rave about LCD TVs so much. When you see them in the shops the picture is muddy and frequently blurred. It was a pleasant surprise therefore to see this one, which appeared clear, crisp and with none of the annoying movement blurs or blurs around the edges of say peoples faces. What a disappointment therefore to get it home and find that using freeview, the blurring is there (and my signal is very good). It turns out that the shop were running it off a HDMI enabled DVD player.... Having said that, its better than most other LCDs I've seen, but CRT TVs are far superior in picture quality. Maybe when high definition tv finally comes out, it'll be different, but for the moment, the only good thing about LCD tvs is that they are lighter!
