Amazon.co.uk Review
David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd's sitcom 'Allo 'Allo started life in 1982 as a modest one-off spoof of the classic 1970s drama series Secret Army. A throwback to an earlier era during the 1980s heyday of alternative comedy, the show's decidedly un-PC mix of bedroom farce and crudely drawn national stereotypes was subsequently stretched over nine series in all (1984-1992), making it TV's successor to the long-running Carry On series. 'Allo 'Allo was not only similarly preoccupied with seaside postcard humour, it was also blessed with a cracking ensemble cast (including Carry On veteran Kenneth Connor) whose sheer energy eked out comic gold from even the laziest jokes about humourless Germans, cowardly Italians, "Tally ho!" Brits and onion-selling Frenchmen. Like Croft & Lloyd's Are You Being Served, it was the cast interaction more than the material itself that produced the laughs. Despite its determination never to vary the formula from week to week, the show had at least one virtue--it wasn't afraid to offend anyone. --Mark Walker

A Classic Series
I dont wish to say too much about series 3 and 4 except to say it follows in the tradition of the first two series. Enhanced by a new barmaid and an airman who is disguised as a French Police Officer ("Gud Moaning, I have a massage for Ronny") it remains a laugh a minute throughout with some hilarious episodes. For instance, tunnelling into a prisoner of war camp, a barmaid disguised as a nun being flown through the air on a kite, German Officers desperatly trying to avoid the Gestapo Officer Herr Flick getting his hands on the real painting of the Fallen Madonna with the big, well you know what I mean. When are the remainder of the series being released though? Hope its soon so I can complete my collection.
Listen vegggy caggggefully....
One of the best. Just brilliant. Enjoy it. Subtitles! good for that. We are all waiting for the sale of the stock of Series 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 so Playback decides to keep going with the remaining 6 series. By the way, Playback: still waiting for Keeping up with appearances Series 5 and Specials to complete my collection. Thanks!
One of the best sitcoms ever
I grew up with this series and love the carry on style humour. It's a great shame that the final 5 series have not been released on DVD. I think the reason for this is because Series 5 is very long - around 20+ episodes because the show became popular in America.
The BBC should make the effort and put all these episodes out on DVD. This is one of the most under-rated comedies and needs to be brought to a new wider audience. A true British classic comedy.
