OK, but you can live without
So this is the only book you'll find on Gdansk. Even at the airport you will struggle to find a guide on gdansk. This book in general is mostly accurate. Its not as reader friendly as some of the Top 10/DK books. The pics are very poor, dark and dull and theres not enough of them. This immediately gives you the feeling of why would i come here but in reality Gdansk is pretty, some say that it is on par with krakow.
The other criticism is the mini dictionary. With all these guides you get a list of phrases and words that you will come across and find useful. However in this book the phrases and words are rather limited. Why the hell would i want to know what 1000 is in polish? On a positive it does help u to pronounce the words by spelling out what the word sounds like which is good.
Overall, if you're not that bothered i would not buy this book. Instead do some research on the net and when u arrive at gdansks teeny airport get yourself along to the tourist info and pick up some english guides for free which contain just as good info.
Concise cynical and useful
If you've ever read Molvania, A land untouched by modern dentistry, then here is the straight version with a similar slant.
The chapter on culture starts, this is from memory so paraphrasing a bit, "No one would visit Gadansk for its art galleries and museums...'. The book is soberly realistic about all of the area's limited aesthetic charms but is glowing regarding the nighlife of Sopol, the sun drenched seaside resort half an hour north by train. 'Sun drenched seaside resort' is exactly the kind of phrase you wont find anywhere in this rather jaded review. If you want a brief honest guide this could be what you are looking for, nothing is talked up, the area is a bit drab just like the book says. We set out to take a picture of each other next to the ugliest exposed pipe and graffiti covered demolished building we could find but discovered quite a few interesting places along the way, a pretty good art gallery and some lovely, all-be-it reconstructed areas along the waterfront.
