Useful guide for first timers
This is a great little book if you are considering doing the Three Peaks of Yorkshire on your own or without anyone with previous experience. The book provides excellent detail of the route and landmarks as well as giving useful (if slightly rudimentary) advice on the right clothing and provisions for the walk. There is also a useful little sketch map of the route in the back but this is no substitute for a proper OS map of the area. This is well worth buying and reading before you go but really contains too much detail to use as a route guide. Useful to keep in the rucksack for emergencies though.
Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk
This book was essential in successfully navigating the Three Peaks route and is aimed specifically at walkers planning to attempt the route. We were fortunate to walk in good conditions so the level of detail included was not always needed. Navigation information is accurate, particularly the grid-references, and will be very helpful in poor visibility.
Estimated walking times for specified sections(see p38) are accurate for reasonably fit walkers. With stops, allow around 12 hours for first-timers.
Accommodation list is useful, but the pubs listed should also include phone nos and whether they offer B&B (some do e.g. the Crown, Horton).
Walkers will also need a suitable 1:25000 map (e.g. OS Explorer OL2) - the book includes a sketch map of the walk, but this is not intended to replace a map. For information, the OS 1:50000 map does not show sufficient detail for safe navigation between Pen-y-ghent and Whernside.
