John Collins takes us on a marine adventure within the oceans that lap many of our most populated shores, from the north Atlantic around western Europe, to the chilly Pacific of North America and south to the Great White sharks of Africa. His photographic portrait of a little explored part of our ocean world is the culmination of twenty years of diving the seas around Ireland, Scotland, Canada, South Africa and Tasmania. From his voyages, he brings us 120 photographs illustrating the colourful and bizarre life below while also conveying the mood of exploration - his photographs are interpretative rather than purely documentary. Of the seven tenths of our blue planet, we have explored but a fraction. Away from coral reefs, the ocean world between the tropics and the poles is the most vibrant and productive of all our seas. Overall the author has done an excellent job of providing an insight into the natural and man-made underwater environment. His obvious enthusiasm for documenting this environment and his love of photography is tangible and the photographs are some of the best I have ever seen. He captures the excitement and intrigue associated with the oceans through the text and most obviously through the outstanding pictures. Jeremy Gault, Coastal & Marine Resources Centre, Cork

Great Photos from Temperate Waters
Now I have a book where I can explain why I dive so much in Irish Waters. People assume there's nothing to see when you dive in Ireland and that you need to dive coral reefs to see anything. Pictures are excellent. Quotes from Dive Pioneers are inspiring. The text is surprisingly good for what is primarily a book of underwater photos.

Cool waters indeed, a very cool read.
This is one excellently researched and brilliantly put together books on the underwater world. The images capture a world that most are never privy to. From the tranquil underwater and over-water images in and around Ireland to the snarling image of a great white shark in South Africa, this book brings us on a photographic journey to the far flung corners of the globe. Fantastic and deserving of 5 and more stars!
