A triumph!
The Dufay Collective are one of the most successful medieval ensembles around and righfully so.They have a unique style, which is instantly recognizable, and they never fail to surprise or delight in every album they release, demonstrating their diversity, originality and masterful interpretations. This album, "On the Banks of the Seine", invites the listener into the captivating musical legacy of the French trouvere, the minstrel from the northern regions of France. Although the Dufay Collective are known for their upbeat, exciting and highly accomplished instrumental dance pieces,in this album they prove that they are also accomplished and sensitive singers that demonstrate a singular capacity for vocal arrangements. This album is a reflective one, evoking a wide spectrum of emotions from the powerful and deeply stirring vocal harmonies of the trio of male voices in the motets of Adam de la Halle to the softer, more pensive songs sung by the group's regular vocalist, Vivian Ellis, who is a diverse singer that often surprises the listener with the different qualities of voice she produces. There are several very striking pieces in this album, most notably the highly enjoyable and rather addictive set of "Ses tres dou regars/C'est la fin/Prendes i garde/", the strikingly beautiful "Volez vous que je vous chant", and the haunting "L'autre jour par un matin"; this is a very strong album throughout, reflected in every piece. "On the of the Seine" is a highly enjoyable, very beautiful and emotionally stirring album, and my personal favourite of all their albums.
