Customer Reviews
O LIVE R fantastic
Just recieved this CD in the post and was totally blown away, Jodie Prenger proves she was the worthy winner of i'll do anything and brings a new tenderness to Nancy. Having believed there was only one Fagin that of Ron Moody, Rowan Atkinson takes on the role with a touch of Blackadder and Mr Bean and i can see why Cameron Mackintosh had persued him for so long to play the role. The Children who vied for the role of Oliver on the same show as Jodi do not disappoint.
To have a live version of the show makes a huge impression for those like me who have yet to see the show and is totally different from the usual cast recordings. It was clear to me why Sir Cameron loves Oliver as a show and Lionel Barts classic show has been given a new life, with this excellent version. Consider yourself lucky as you listen to this version of the show, and i will be there in the Auidence in August with my Girlfriend enjoying every second of this great revival of a timeless show classic
O-living up to expectations!
This wonderful "live" recording of hit musical Oliver! kicks off with the much loved Food Glorious Food, which is guaranteed to leave you hungry for MORE!
Winners of TV competition I'd Do Anything Jodie Prenger and Laurence Jeffcoate as Nancy and Oliver star alongside Rowan Atkinson and Ross McCormack as Fagin and Dodger, and a more perfect cast truly could not have been chosen. Jodie nails As Long As He Needs Me, interacts great with the kids in Fine Life, and makes you feel as though you're sitting in The Three Cripples pub, watching her dance on tables and sing Oom Pah Pah. Lawrence promises to melt your heart with Where Is Love, and send you straight to buy this soundtrack after Who Will Buy. Ross seems to be channeling Jack Wild's performance in Consider Yourself, and does a great job of it too. And Rowan couldn't portray a more perfect penny pinching Fagin in Pick-A-Pocket Or Two.
If you've only seen the film version of Oliver! before, you will enjoy several "new" songs which are only in the stage version, and if you've seen the play before you will get to revisit your old favorites, such as Burn Gorman's menacing performance as Bill Sykes in My Name and the wonderfully grim That's Your Funeral. The supporting cast includes Charlotte Spencer as Nancy's ballsy best friend Bet, and not forgetting all the kids who make the show what it is.
Amazing Live Recording
I would like to give a review about the CD and not the show, for I had listened to the CD but had not seen this version of Oliver (Yet).
This is a Live recording of Oliver as it is on the stage of the Drury Lane, and I think it is amazing.
Rowan Atkinson sounds amazing as Fagin with his special Diction. You can hear how he is Puffing the P, and how he is spiTTing the T, in a grate way that is typical to him.
Jodie Prenger brings an amazing Nancy with a raucous voice, which is "like" raucous from Jin, and that brings the character something very sad and emotional,
Even when she sings the Oom-Pa -Pa.
The orchestration is also very good. The band that sounds like a funeral band in "That's your funeral" , the xylophone (or an instrument that sounds like one) that is in the background when Oliver sings "I'd do anything" , and the amazing violin in the background when Fagin sings Reviewing the situation, makes you want to hear this CD again and again.
