MIDNIGHT CLUB LOS ANGELES - SEE THE STARS!
Midnight Club Los Angeles is the fourth in the series of Midnight Club games and it is absolutely great! The city of angels is stunning to look at, with noticeable landmarks such as the Hollywood sign and Santa Monica pier on the way. Gameplay is varied with everything from point to point races to circuit racing and even a mode where you have to crash another car off the road! Sounds are good with everthing from rap to rock songs and some dance too. The only slight problem is that the game is rather difficult but nevertheless challenging as some race routes are a bit frustrating aswell as AI being a bit gruesome! But All in All a good game.
Excelent Game Fail to see the reason for the hate
I played this game first while visiting a friend. I'm usualy cautious about new racing games becase they are either a poor rip off of the need for speed series or they are not origional. At first I took a dislike to the game when presented with 3 bad cars to start out with.
However after about an hour or so of playing and a few tune ups later I had grown very fond of the car dubbing it the "Initial D car" this was only helped by the huge ammount of customization that is avaliable including the licence plates and weel dimensions.
I read other reviews saying how the crash system made it imposible to recover a race after the first crash. and i simply found this to be untrue. if you crash at everyother turn your likely to loose but if you keep an eye out and drive well enough you should be able to keep the other racers from escaping.People seem to look down on the crash aspect of the game but all i can tell is that they must be terrible at the game to lose on every ocasion they crash.
The pinkslip race system was very intuitive since the first attempt i made at the race resulted me losing my car. But when i returned with my "initial D" car seeing it as a make or break part of the gane i was relieved to see that the car i had lost could be won back.
Finaly the powerups. (my personal favourite Roar) never ceased to make me laugh when at the flick of a button you can send your oponent cars flying off the road into traffic.
Almost flawless
This game is absolutely STUNNING. The graphics are breathtaking, L.A. never looked so good or realistic. I have read that people think the game becomes too hard but quite honestly I haven't found that to be the case thus far. I have been involved in 3 police chases and twice I was caught and once I got away, although that was more my fault than the A.I being too intelligent/aggressive.
I love the fact that Rockstar have added an in-car view, which really shows that they have worked hard on every little detail of the game. For me, the in-car view adds a great deal to the experience. The GPS system is amazing and the map is extremely detailed. I wasn't that impressed with MC 3 on the PS2 because the graphics were very mediocre, even by the PS2's standards. Much of the time, I was unable to see the obstructions in front of me and ended up smacking into a wall. That is no longer an issue due to the crystal clear, near-perfect graphics so well done Rockstar!
The racing is fast and furious and very free-roaming, a lot more so than the Need for Speed games which limit the racing area to several shortcuts but nothing really substantial. In MC:LA, you can literally take ANY route to reach the finishing line, although naturally some routes are less desirable than others.
Customization of cars is superb, with the ability to even change the license plate number and state of the car.
As someone previously mentioned, it is also a nice touch to find that the motorway (or freeway as the Americans would say) is busier or quieter, depending on the time of day. You race in both daylight and at night, adding to the racing experience and giving a more realistic passage of time.
My only 'criticism' of the game (if you can call it that) is that American cars are over-represented. I know, I know, it's an American game but I would have liked to see a bit more balance between American, Japanese and European manufacturers, as evident in Forza 2, for example.
All I can say is that if you're a fan of free-roaming and racing games, get this game.
