This item is worth the money sure you can use any universal cable out there but this ne is made for the 360 and it fits right. Having bought 2 other universal cables which did not seed right in the optic out on the hd cable and kept falling out i bought this one and it seeds right plu its a decent length.

Don't fork out, get this.
This cable does the job perfectly well and just as good as my expensive coax digital cable. Also as other reviewers have pointed out, this fits securely in the xbox's optical port and has to be physicaly uncliped to fall out.
To be honest I can't see how a more expensive cable could make a difference as optical cable cannot pick up interferance, length isn't an issue because the data travels at the speed of light and thickening the cable just makes it heavier as the light travels just the same anyway, also digital= on or off.
Don't go down to currys and be ripped off on a belkin heavy rope cable, just buy this.

Excellent Cable
Bought this cable for my xbox 360 - fantastic piece of kit. Sits in the xbox port snuggly, which was a concern on some of the other optical cables - it is also nearly 3 metres in length, so no problem connecting up to your amp.

5.1 surround works flawlessly - also gives much better sound when streaming DivX/XVid files through the 360 too.

Well worth the purchase.
