Stunning and mesmerising
Having first grabbed attention with the black and white 2000AD series "Necronauts", "Storming Heaven" collects three of Irving's shorter, but no less impressive series. Of these three main offerings, "From Grace" will likely stay in the mind longest after the book has been put down. Chronicling the dying moments of a monstrous tyrant as he reflects on the events of his life, it's moving, disturbing, utterly unforgettable and unlike anything I've read in comics before or since. It's also as far as I'm aware Irving's first collaboration with writer Simon Spurrier, a partnership which has gone on to reap great creative rewards.
"A Love Like Blood" is another corker, putting a fresh spin on the tale of Romeo&Juliet by setting it against the backdrop of an age old gang war between vampires and werewolves. That may sound a little like "Underworld", but "Underworld" was mince and this most certainly isn't. By Irving's own admission(in the foreword) it's the dark stuff he does best and this oozes darkness out of every panel. "Storming Heaven" itself is possibly the weakest thing here, as the tripped out tale of LSD-fuelled superhero wars won't appeal to everyone, but it's certainly a wild trip and the artwork is gorgeous throughout.
Even just collecting these 3 tales would be worthy of the purchase price, but you also get a few sketchbook snippets and a few one off tales, including the wonderfully twisted "Reefer Madness" and the Shaun Of The Dead strips(written by Simon Pegg himself), adding value to an already great package. The artwork itself is simply stunning, with Irving's unique voice fantastic to behold. Occasionally you forget the story and just lose yourself in the wonderfully stylish artwork, and with the length of time you'll pore over each page you'll certainly be getting your moneys worth.
