The Dredd Bible
It's a solid gold classic.
After 30-odd years John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, finally let us in on what went before. Fargo, the cursed earth, Dredd and Rico, Mega City 1, the Judges themselves, we see the humble beginnings of everything here for the first time. Ezquerra's artwork is up to his usual high standards, and Wagner's writing has you hooked from the start. I'm glad I missed this story in the pages of 2000AD, as there's no way I could have waited 7 days for the next handfull of pages, after each instalment.
Add to that the fact that you're eased into it with an introductory story illustrated by Kev Walker's unrivalled mastery of shadow-building inks, and you've got the best 8 quid you'll ever spend.
At last - Origins!
Dredd fans have waited a long time for this. The definitive origins of the Justice Department and Dredd's world is brought to life by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. Wagner does a great job of tying together the loose ends of 30 years of Dredd, bringing us a compelling picture of the end of our world and the beginning of Dredd's.
The character of Dredd is an anti-hero who lives in post-apocalyptic America, but no American comic would ever have given birth to Dredd. Thankfully I was privileged to be at the perfect age (15) and living in England when Dredd came on the scene.
Although Origins has some plot flaws (unsurprising since so much unrelated lore had to be tied together) and I think the ending is too rushed, this story will stand alongside great Dredd stories like America, The Pit and The Apocalypse War. Surely we have not seen the end of Dredd, and hopefully we never shall, but we have finally seen Dredd's beginning.
Couldn't put it down
I was late getting into the Dredd World and having read a great deal of dredd's world in the later years, The Origins had always eluded me.
This book however shows the world prior to the Justice department, And how and why the Judges needed to take over the running of the big Meg.
I would highly recommend this book to anybody starting out reading Dredd and to those like me who need to know how it all started.
if you like it then try "the Complete America", Without doubt one of the finest Dredd Books ever written.
