Amazon.co.uk Review

For over a decade now fans have been wondering just what a team-up between Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog would be like. Everything from traditional platform games to complex role-playing titles have been suggested, but it’s fair to say nobody imagined that it would finally happen in the form of an athletics simulator. It’s officially licensed from the 2008 Beijing Olympics though (Sega already had the license for their own more traditional tie-in) and contains all the usual events you’d expect including the 100m sprint, swimming, judo, table tennis, hammer throwing and archery. Sega have even been talking about using the new Wii Zapper controller for a spot of clay pigeon shooting.

More than twenty-five characters from both universes will be playable in the game, including not just Mario and Sonic but also Luigi, Tails, Yoshi, Knuckles, Bowser, Doctor Eggman, Princess Peach and Amy. Other characters will have cameos as judges such as Cream the Cat and Toad. You’d expect some characters to be naturally better at some sports than others but each has their own strengths and weakness, with even Sonic’s incredible speed mitigated by his slow acceleration. The whole game is developed by Sega but overseen by legendary Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto, with full tournament and missions modes as well as online leaderboards for all the different events. The name may sound like an April Fool’s joke at first but this crossover could well be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Manufacturer's Description
In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, players compete in events that take place in environments based on the official venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Using a supporting cast of characters from the amazing worlds of both Mario and Sonic, gamers can compete as or against a range of lovable personalities including Mario, Sonic, Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi, Tails and more. Innovative usage of the Wii and DS control systems to maneuver a favourite character allow players to race the likes of Mario and Sonic down the 100m track, engage in exhilarating rallies in table tennis and churn water in a swimming heat, all while competing for the much sought after gold medal.

Good but let down.......3
When it got this game I thought it was brilliant after 2 months I still thought it was brilliant. BUT after 3 months this game was pretty average the reason being the lack of events, yea sure I got hundreds of world records but there is just NOT ENOUGH EVENTS!!!!!! The graphics are very good there are some good characters to choose from, there are some dream events which are quite fun that you can't have anywhere else. Another thing with the game is that if you get a world record on 2 player mode it doesn't count, for example I threw 113 meters on javelin in 2 p mode when the record is only 98 meters and it says 'new world record on the results table but when you start again next time you play it will be 98 meters!

Just take my advice GET SUMMER ATHLETICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fantabulous multiplayer. V. Good single player5
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is an amazing game. Multiplayer is by far the best part of it.
Theres also such a varied number of games. Usually there are 5 of us playing and we're all good at different things so no one feels left out. Single player is not quite as good but still very fun.
I don't understand how people find the controls difficult. Theyre really easy. And I love the way swimming strokes are different for each character. Me and my best friend love doing the swimming relay together, and it was fun trying out each character to put the fastest in our relay.

All in all I REALLY RECOMMEND this game

Fun in short bursts. Oh, and it makes your arms ache! 4
For a Mario & Sonic Olympics game, this is pretty good. The controls work well on almost all events (table tennis is my least favourite) and the Dream races are fun. Also, unlocking Olympics trivia and Mario and Sonic songs is cool!

I recommend this game to people who are interested in Mario, Sonic and the Olympics. However I do not recommend it to people who expect a brilliant Mario and Sonic crossover, which it actually isn't. Also, it's a shame there's no real wifi play instead of leaderboards.
