Manufacturer's Description

Monopoly is the classic property trading board game. Invented in America during the Great Depression, it's the game about dealing in big money and getting rich quick. Starting from the famous "GO" space, move around the board, buying, selling and trading properties, making deals, building apartments and hotels as you go. Watch out for players landing on your property - they owe you rent! And don't forget to collect £2,000,000 every time you pass "GO"! That's right, £2MILLION in cash!

The world has changed amazingly over the last 70 years and you've now got the opportunity to decide which are the greatest locations in the UK to go onto our new Monopoly Here & Now UK edition. For 4 weeks in May we're running an online vote on the Monopoly website to ask the people of the UK to decide the Top 22 greatest locations in the UK to make it onto the final board and the one with the most votes will make it onto the coveted `Mayfair' spot. You can vote for one of the 66 UK cities or cast a vote for your town or village using our `Wildcard option.' There are campaign packs online so you can download posters and drum up support locally to try and get your location onto top spot. Also there is a live leader board so you can see exactly how your location is doing. The vote will run until midnight on the 25th May and you can vote once a day so don't forget to come back and check how your chosen location is doing! We'll reveal the final board and which locations have made which spots later in the year!!

Your success depends on wise speculation, smart investments and clever deals. Even if your luck fails, you can still resort to mortgages and deals with other players. If you become the wealthiest player with so much money that you own it all - you win Monopoly!

  • The Game
The idea is to buy and rent or sell properties around the board. Starting from "GO" players move their tokens around the board according to the throw of the dice. When a player's token lands on a space that's not already owned, they can buy it from the bank, otherwise it is auctioned off to the highest bidder. The object of owning property is to collect rent from any other player that lands there. Rent is increased by the erection of apartments and hotels, so it is wise to build them on some of your properties. Community Chest and Chance spaces give the draw of a card, instructions on which must be followed. Sometimes players land in Jail! The game is one of shrewd and amusing trading and excitement.

    The History

It was 1934, the height of the Depression, when Charles B. Darrow of Germantown, Pennsylvania, showed what he called the Monopoly game to the executives at Parker Brothers. Can you believe it, they rejected the game due to "52 design errors"! But Mr Darrow wasn't daunted. Like many other Americans, he was unemployed at the time, and the game's exciting promise of fame and fortune inspired him to produce it on his own.

With help from a friend who was a printer, Mr Darrow sold 5,000 handmade sets of the game to a Philadelphia department store. People loved it! But as demand grew, he couldn't keep up with all the orders and came back to talk to Parker Brothers again. The rest, as they say, is history! In its first year, 1935, the Monopoly game was the best-selling game in America. And over its 65-year history, an estimated 500 million people have played!

The Monopoly game is so much a part of today's popular culture that lawyers have trademarked many of its graphic elements. The Tokens, Railroad, Community Chest, Chance, and Title Deed designs, as well as the original Boardwalk and all four gameboard corners are legally protected.

    Customer Reviews

    If it ain't broke don't fix it2
While this retains a lot of the original enjoyable features of the game and trying to buy our favourites cities added to the interest, the attempt to update the prices and money have just complicated matters beyond belief. Now you need a calculator handy to work out some of the transactions and our 'banker' was driven to distraction by players constantly needing change. We abandoned our attempt to count up at the end as it all those extra zeros just got too confusing... and we had 4 maths O levels between us!
