Digital Sports Photography?
I can't decide to what level of expertise this book is aimed. There is frequent reference to 'Point and Shoot' camera's as well as top end SLR's. For anyone already using top end equipment, this would be a complete waste of time. On the other hand, a novice using a 'point and shoot' compact camera will be seriously confused by frequent errors. eg., a section that struggles to explain 'White Balance' adjustments for shooting snow scenes - If the reader substitutes 'Exposure Control' for 'White Balance' it would make more sense. In addition to short comings in the text, the photographs included don't inspire. With only the odd exception, the images have an amateurish look and are printed so small as to be useless anyway.
There's some reasonable advice on covering various sports, but some get only a passing mention, eg., athletics.
I thought this book would help in my new found interest in sports photography. It didn't. I can not recommend this book to anyone.
A useful reference book
If you're looking for a book with lots of photo examples, then, this book isn't for you. It does have some, but it is more of a text book. It has lots of information about camera equipment, techniques for taking the best pictures, downloading from camera to the usual hardware, editing, softwares that are used, working on-line etc. It even covers those of you who are looking to go professional, with a section on the legal aspects of working in the photography industry. Bear in mind though, that this is a U.S. based book - some of the legal aspects may be different in other countries.
Advice from pro photographers is included, but not every sport is covered. In some cases, only a short passage was offered (boxing was one), although the techniques discussed overall could cover many sports.
The author didn't ignore amateur or low budget photographers either. The pro's and con's of using low end compacts and point & shoot cameras are discussed as well as top quality SLR's and professional lenses. I would say that most types of photographer are catered for.
Good bits;- The advice on techniques for getting best/better pictures. And the inclusion of all camera types.
Not so good bits;- Need more action photo examples, and of more sports.
