Jodorowsky's films are an accquired taste but are beautifully rewarding. A portrayal of one man's tragic journey that is both disturbing and surreal. A cinematic equivalent of Ernst or Dali.

The horror is supplied by some hallucinatory set-pieces and visual tricks. It also lies within the confusion, despair and frustration endured by Jacob. All of this builds to a powerful conclusion.

A tightly directed and thoughtful update of the "boogeyman" urban legend for the modern age. More unsettling than outright scary but an exhilarating ride with some deft social observations to boot.

Sumatran rat-monkeys, kung-fu vicars, rabid grannies eating pet dogs, zombies having sex at the dinner table, talking intestines, THAT lawnmower scene...the splatter film to end all splatter films.

This unique movie transcends a lot of the other films in the zombie sub-genre. It is a bizarre tale of love and death that majestically treads the thin line between arthouse and exploitation.

An intriguing premise breathes new life into Freddy taking him back to the brutal killer he should be, albeit a different kind of evil. More clever and more satisfying than the overrated "Scream".

This is more competent than people give it credit for. It may not be groundbreaking but it has some intense moments, original set-pieces and high production values. A sleeper that gets under your skin

The creepy catalyst of modern J-horror. Genuinely unsettling with far more focus than the apallingly muddled remake and with much more playful and bizarre direction too. An unnerving masterpiece.

A creepily engaging and classy story that scares you without any overtly gory moments. One of my favourite Asian frighteners and another that benefits from knowing little to nothing before viewing.

The film utilises realistic characters, brilliant observation, classic special effects and Edgar Wright's notorious attention to detail. There is plenty for everyone to enjoy in this film.

Rob Zombie's loving homage to grindhouse cinema is scruffy, cool, trashy, sadistic and exciting. This is the successor to films like Last House On The Left, albeit with a modern referential coolness.

While Hollywood spews out endless inferior remakes (mainly of films on this list) this is more proof, if any were needed, that Europe is at the bleeding edge of innovative terror in the 21st century.
