Editorial Reviews

Review
'Essential Grammar in Use is highly recommendable for the use of self-study or as supplementary course material because of its clarity, conciseness, illustrative examples, convenient arrangement, and outstanding lay-out.' VVLE Newsletter, Belgium, 1997

'Never heard of Murphy? Well, then it is high time you rush to the nearest book shop and buy it. It is still the best grammar book and has been so for the last 12 years … The explanations – always one page – of any grammar item are clear and illustrated not only with good examples but also motivating pictures. On the page facing these explanations you are offered a good selection of exercises. They are easy to understand and also illustrated with pictures.' 'If you feel your students need and also want more of them, there is the volume with the Supplementary Exercises. This means no work for you, you do not have to make up your own examples – it is all there.' ETAS, Switzerland, 1997

A Classic5
Murphy is a classic in TEFL. The students like the way grammar is broken into pieces and made accessible. I have had many students who despised ‘grammar’ but loved ‘Murphy’. Each grammar point is explained using easily understandable examples. There are illustrations to lighten up the entries, but also to clarify situations. Timelines are used throughout the book and there are many useful tables. Every entry consists of two pages. On the left the grammar is explained, on the right, there are exercises for the students.
There is another Murphy for more advanced students. When copying exercises, take care that the book you use for your course material might not teach all the aspects of a point of grammar at the same time.
There is also a third book (not by Murphy) for advanced students. It is different in style, even though it looks similar.

A clear and correct self study or course aid.5
I have been using this book, as have students of mine, for many years. Simply great, clear, and simple with the Blue-Green intermediate book to follow it up. It's got only two faults. One it's overpriced in spain but then again so are most books. Secondly the exercises can be over long, I suggest that odd or even numbers only are done and the others missed out, so long as no mistakes are made.

Apart from this its excellent especially since all the students I've used it with have loved it. the format is excellent the layout is clear even the size is just right. an essential teaching or learning aid.

disappointing.1
I was very disappointed with this book having read the reviews. the english exercises are to me below elementary level and gives little /mostly no explanation for a new student.
