It takes an adult learner seriously and is fun to work with4
I was looking for a photo dictionary for adults to fill in the occasional vocabulary gap. With a good choice of word fields for daily conversations, this is the best book I could find.

The dictionary consists of 3000 words from a little over 100 word fields. Being a photo dictionary, there is of course an emphasis on nouns. The word fields are grouped in 17 basic categories, which gives the book a clear structure. Each word field is described on one page. At the bottom of each page there are a few exercises, and there is a brief exercise section at the end of the book. Apparently the exercises do not form an important part of the book, and that is what I like about it. The page design with many colour photos is appropriate for learning and still not boring. The pictures are well chosen. Only on very rare occasions the meaning of a word does not become clear from the corresponding picture. For the pronunciation of words, the standard IPA phonetic alphabet is used. The decision not to include pronunciations in the main part of the book seems a little unfortunate to me, however. Similarly, some words can be found with the same or a different meaning in more than one word field, but there are no cross-references in the main part of the book. Learning would be a little bit more efficient if the exercises were replaced or complemented by the pronunciations and possible cross-references.

Overall, I am quite content with this dictionary. It takes an adult learner seriously and is fun to work with. 4 stars out of 5.

Excellent book for beginners5
A wonderful colourful picture book. It is an excellent source of vocabulary suitable for those beginning to learn English. Also it is not like a child's photo dictionary so ideal for adults. The CD is a great way for them to perfect there pronunciation too.

I bought this for a friend - I didn't really have a good look at it, but to me it looked very simple, like a kid's book, but for a foreigner, I think is exceptionally good for learning basic english. She was very happy with it.
