Amazon.co.uk Review
The film Almost Famous is set in 1973, a time when rock and roll was about to evolve into a lumbering, arena-conquering dinosaur. Director Cameron Crowe--who was himself a teenage rock journalist for Rolling Stone magazine--has applied his own first-hand knowledge of the 1970s rock scene and co-produced a soundtrack that neatly encapsulates an era in rock and roll history. Contributions from Simon and Garfunkel ("America") and the Beach Boys ("Feel Flows") nod to a gentler musical scene on its way out, while tracks by Lynyrd Skynyrd ("Simple Man"), the Allman Brothers Band ("One Way Out") and Led Zeppelin ("That's The Way") indicate the shape of rock to come. Meanwhile, David Bowie's version of "I'm Waiting for the Man" hints at the glam scene lurking just around the corner, and Clarence Thomas's "Slip Away" provides an example of perfect 1970s soul. Even Almost Famous's fictitious house band, Stillwater, contribute a track: the nicely retro, guitar-rocking "Fever Dog". --Robert Burrow

Customer Reviews

Good, but a little dissapointing3
Music taste is certainly very personal, and this soundtrack is definitely a very personal CD too. For me, stand-out tracks were certainly those by the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, The Beach Boys, Stillwater, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrnd and Elton John, although there are tracks on here that will satisfy most fans of music from the 70's. The trouble with a soundtrack is that it must try to encompass everybody's tastes, and also, to some extent, remind the listener of the film. This means that it would be rare for the listener to necessarily enjoy every track (although that isn't rare on an album). This is where the problem lay slightly for me- although the tracks i new and loved were brilliant to have all on one CD, i felt that there was a need for more of that type. The makers of the Soundtrack are, unfortunately, unable to win, because there are not going to many people who enjoy the entire album. That said, the tracks that i did enjoy were excellent to have together, but, if you want something more- choose the standout tracks from the listing, and go and buy and entire album by that band- you'll be much more satisfied.

Marvellous...5
Great soundtrack cd to an excellent film. I thoroughly recommend it.

To answer the question. Pete Droge is the name of the singer/guitarist, Elaine Summers is the woman's name. Droge formed a group with U.S. singer-songwriters and guitarists Shawn Mullins and Matthew Sweet in 2003 under the name The Thorns and they released an album called -- The Thorns.

Director Cameron Crowe said the 'Small-Time Blues' performance was a tribute to Gram Parsons who died later in the year that the film is set, 1973. I guess Ms. Summers is meant to be Emmylou Harris.

An awesome album! However, its about time a collectors edition was released containing the missing tracks. None more so than 'Small Time Blues,' which features in the DVD bonus material. Who is the artist of that song anyway? I AM A GOLDEN GOD!!!!!!!
