Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Released as a glass-raising toast to the longstanding loyalty of his Irish fan base (whose thirst for fresh David Gray material is truly quenchless), Lost Songs assembles material written during a label-hopping lapse either side of the Sell Sell Sell album and which was belatedly committed to tape in October of 1999. Far from being a tatty what-I-did-in-my-spare-time scrapbook of discards and B-side quality cast-offs, Lost Songs offers conclusive proof that even David Gray's folk-pop wastepaper basket is lined with silver. Effortlessly maintaining Gray's brand-image as a troubadour-with-a-troubled-outlook, via a homogeneous selection of achy and predominantly acoustic heart-on-sleeve urban spirituals, many of Lost Songs' choicest moments ("Flame Turns Blue", "As I'm Leaving", "Falling Down the Mountainside") could all be Dylanesque rungs from White Ladder. The only question remaining now is how much higher can he climb? --Kevin Maidment

David Gray's best!5
A moody album that can make your hairs stand on end. This album is spine-tingly good. If you like White Ladder (like myself) or acoustic tracks in general, then you should not hesitate to buy this album. This is David Gray's best offering but it is raw. Not an album for chart-music/pop fans. Buy it!

an inspiration to the world5
probably like most david gray fans, i become a follower because of white ladder, then listening to him live at earls court a few years ago he inspired me to pick up a guitar, (still stuggling!), lost songs will strip away your barriers and have you in tears, listen to the lyrics from "flame turns blue" and "as im leaving" ,if you have ever loved, lost, and found within your life dont allow another day to pass without owning this album, and within a week you too will be typing something similar to me, 100% definatley, 100% respect to david gray!!!!!!

A couple of real gems here3
David Gray. The name reminds us of the man behind such classics as 'Babylon', 'Please forgive me' and in my opinion 'Late night radio' the latter being possibly the best of the bunch and is unjustly not a classic to everyone. 'Lost songs 1995-1998' is an insight into the early work of one of the defining songwriters of the past few years. Although not really a patch on 'White ladder' it has some interesting songs contained.
For me, 'A clean pair of eyes' and 'Twilight' are the real gems on the album but there are a few others that are still very good. The album lacks the touch of class of his later work but it is good enough to warrent the price tag and is really a must for any real David Gray fans. Probably better than a three out of five but not quite a four, it spent quite a while in my cd player.
