Amazon.co.uk Review
While it invites charges of Hollywood nepotism, Orange County overcomes that stigma with a delightful cast of newcomers and veterans alike. It's no better or worse than many teen comedies, but director Jake Kasdan (son of director Lawrence Kasdan) astutely combines teen-flick staples (stoner gags, raucous parties) with a biting undercurrent of southern California absurdity. This comedic texture helps Colin Hanks (son of Tom) and Schuyler Fisk (daughter of Sissy Spacek) to prove their big-screen promise. They play (respectively) an Orange County teen and aspiring writer named Shaun who yearns for admission to Stanford, and his sensible girlfriend who knows just how to nurture his dreams. Much of the comedy arises from the foibles of Shaun's dysfunctional family (played to perfection by Jack Black, Catherine O'Hara and John Lithgow), while unbilled cameos by Ben Stiller and Kevin Kline add zest to a movie that tries to be different, and mostly succeeds. --Jeff Shannon

Synopsis
ORANGE COUNTY is a teen comedy that, along with goofy lowbrow fun, offers a surprising amount of wit and heart. Colin Hanks (son of Tom Hanks) stars as Shaun, a carefree California surfer dude who loses a friend to a tsunami. Shaun is contemplating his life when he finds a brilliant novel buried in the sand. He reads it and decides to become a writer himself, and study with the author, who teaches at Stanford. He's eager to leave Orange County, where he lives with his clingy alcoholic mother (Catherine O'Hara) and his burnout brother Lance (a brilliantly debauched Jack Black). When Shaun's guidance counselor (Lily Tomlin) sends the wrong transcript to Stanford, Shaun needs all the help he can get from his seemingly hopeless family to salvage his dream. ORANGE COUNTY was directed by Jake Kasdan (Lawrence Kasdan's son) and written by Mike White (CHUCK & BUCK) who also plays Shaun's illiterate English teacher. Schuyler Fisk (Sissy Spacek's daughter) plays Ashley, Shaun's animal-loving girlfriend, and she and Hanks make an attractive and sympathetic pair. While all kinds of insanity (including hilarious turns by Black, O'Hara, and Harold Ramis) spins around them, the young and dynamic couple remain the soulful center of the film.

Customer Reviews

A pleasant comedy that will keep you smiling3
What it may not do is make you roll around the floor laughing. I found it amusing not hysterically funny, but what made it for me was the feel good nature of it, its charming and likable. Well worth a look, and remind yourself that jack black can be funny.

Disappointed2
I bought this DVD only because I'm a big fan of Jack Black.
Jack Black was very funny in this film (so as many other his films) and other actors did fine jobs too but the story is boring.
It's just another MTV movie which teenagers might be enjoying but is not for over 20's.

Conversations between a teacher and high school students are good examples, i.e. Romeo and Juliet or graduation ceremony.
I am too old not to laugh at these stuff.

However, as I mentioned, Jack Black was brill.

go for it3
orange county is an amusing yarn that passes as solid entertainement as well, nothing more, nothing less and of course there is a niche for films like this, always predictable, usually entertaining and reliable, challenging they are not.
The film tells the tale of a bright kid who dreams of escaping orange county which he views as hell due to his family and friends and the lack of opportunities in the area, when his transcript to a better university is mixed up he faces a dilemma that needs resolution.
All i all this is solid enough and jack black is good as the lay about brother but when all is said and done it wont better or worsen anyones dvd collection
