dissapointingly tedious from Wood2
This sitcom failed to connect with me and I expected so much more from a sitcome written by Victoria wood.

Outstanding5
In this day of reality television, the thought of putting Dinnerladies into the DVD and sitting back to watch each episode is sheer bliss. The characters are all excellent and it does not matter how many times I watch it, it still makes me laugh. Victoria Wood at her very best 10/10.

dazzling dinnerladies5
One of the funniest comedies ever made, I never get tired of watching this. Set in a factory canteen, it deals with the everyday lives of the canteen staff and various visitors. Victoria Wood, who also wrote the show, plays Bren, who tolerantly and humorously holds the rest of the staff together, aided by Tony (Andrew Gunn) the long-suffering canteen manager. One of the best things about it is that all the characters are funny, and all the performances brilliant. My favourite parts are the barbed exchanges between Jean (Anne Reid)and Dolly (Thelma Barlow), who are wonderful together. The rest of the cast are all terrific too, in particular Julie Walters as Bren's outrageous mother, who lives a strange fantasy life in which she rubs shoulders with an assortment of glamorous celebrities, and is much given to saying things like "John Lennon had this emulsion". The guest stars do their bit as well, one of the funniest episodes is episode 2 of series 1, where Simon Williams plays a Royal Duke eating lunch in the canteen on a Ducal visit. The scene where he bares his soul to Bren about the utter boredom of his life is absolutely hilarious.

Series 2, in my opinion, is a bit patchier than series 1, it occasionaly gets too bogged down in seriousness for my taste. However, even series 2 is still much, much funnier than most other comedies. Brilliant writing and dazzling performances come together in this gem of a series, it's cheap at the price, snap it up while you have the chance.
