Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Kevin Costner's 1990 epic won a bundle of Oscars for a moving, engrossing story of a white soldier (Costner) who singlehandedly mans a post in the 1870 Dakotas, and becomes a part of the Lakota Sioux community who live nearby. The film may not be a masterpiece, but it is far more than the sum of good intentions. The characters are strong, the development of relationships is both ambitious and careful, the love story between Costner and Mary McDonnell's character is captivating. Only the third-act portrait of white intruders as morons feels overbearing, but even that leads to a terribly moving conclusion. Costner's direction is assured, the balance of action and intimacy is perfect--what more could anyone want outside of an unqualified masterpiece? --Tom Keogh

Synopsis
During the U.S. Civil War an army officer is assigned to the Western frontier. Soon after arriving he meets and develops a fascinating relationship with the local Sioux Indians.

an experience rather than just a film5
Five stars are not enough for this superb film. In fact I would go so far to say that this film is an experience rather than just a movie to go and watch at the cinema. All the way through I was captivated as I have rarely been by any film since childhood, it had that ability to really put you into the country, the sound of hooves or the rumble of the buffalo and the way the leaves rustled and the grass was swept by the wind. It's just such experiences that an adult remembers from their childhood, all those little things which told you that you were alive. This film does this. There is no greater acolade.

Costner's finest cinematic moment5
At the time, Costner was regarded as an actor who either played the underdog pitted against a more formidable opponent such as Al Capone, Anthony Quinn (In Revenge) or in his baseball movies; Bull Durham and Field of Dreams.
However, it was 'Dances of Wolves' that led him towards the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the early 1990's, you could either put your money on the Democrats winning the election after the Gulf War or Costner finding a suitable distributor for this film. Both odds were very long.
And yet, both clicked...
This film is near perfect and is his finest cinematic moment. He really invested all his energies fine tuning the photography, casting, music and everything else associated with this production.
His character whilst posted on the North Dakota frontier discovers his true self in the company of Native Americans and from thereon, the film unrolls as an enjoyable journey. Never once does it let up, and its success at the Oscars justifies everything about the production.

"I am Wind In His Hair! And I am your friend!"5
Fantastic! A visually stunning, historically acurate, deeply moving and totally engrossing film.

Though a huge fan of the genre, I hesitate to call this film 'a Western'. To be put into this catagory would put off a lot of people with no interest in the western genre, that would be gripped by the absorbing story and probably thoroughly enjoy this masterpeice of filmaking. Historical epic? Period drama? It just doesn't seem to fit into a neat catagory but so what??? I LOVE IT!

Pilamaya yelo Kevin!
