Good vibrations from rom wild things
This compilation, now re-issued at budget price, was originally released as a full price album supported by TV advertising, to capitalize on the success of Wet wet wet's cover of Love is all around, featured in the soundtrack of Four weddings and a funeral. Their cover spent many weeks at number one in the UK charts and sparked interest in the original sixties version by the Troggs, whose style was raw rock'n'roll. Their lead singer, Reg Presley, had a distinctive, suggestive style.
The Troggs began their run of chart hits with Wild thing, a novelty song that reached number two in the UK but topped the charts for six weeks in America. By the time it peaked in America, the Troggs were on their second UK single – With a girl like you, which went all the way to number one. Thus, they occupied the number one positions in Britain and America simultaneously, but with different songs, but they never reached number one again in either country. Nevertheless, the had several other major UK hits including Love is all around, I can't control myself and Anyway that you want me, all of which made the UK top ten, together with the top twenty UK hits Give it to me and Night of the long grass.
This collection includes some B-sides and many tracks recorded in the seventies and nineties. Most peculiar is their cover of Good vibrations, very different from the original by the Beach boys, but brilliant in its own way. The other songs are mainly original and of a remarkably high quality.
The Troggs were a somewhat odd sixties group but that's why they are worth listening to.
Rather a good compilation
This is an excellent compilation for anyone just getting into the wonderful world of The Troggs. Fans long-in-the-tooth will have everything here already, but even then, it's at a good price and nice to stick in the player to enjoy someone elses choice of Trogg greats.
'Little Girl' has always been a favourite Troggs' ballad, as is the dreamy but rather naughty thoughts behind the 'Cousin Jane' lyrics. Once a single, 'Summertime' is one of Reg's big teaser's, chock full of "what's he going to say next?" terror for the radio stations in its day, but a favourite track once you've heard it and catch on to the cleverness behind it.
Some of the later tracks are from the 'Athens - Andover' album the band recorded with member's of REM; so they're not actually in the 'Greatest Hits' category just yet, but soon could be.
'Jingle Jangle' is from their first LP, and is again a nice and unusual laid-back song, as is my wife Jane's fave, 'I'll Buy You An Island,' which she no doubt wishes Reg would do and take her away there for a break!
Troggs Fans will like this
Fans of The Troggs will love this CD and anyone interested in the thought provoking lyrics in their songs will enjoy this collection of tracks. It would be hard for many of us to compile a long list of Troggs hits but this collection has the classics but mostly the not so well known. If you remember the Troggs then you may be interested in this collection but if your new to their music it will probably not appeal to you.
