Excellent compact iPod speakers
I was mad enough to go & spend £50 on these in a high street electronics retailer - then read the other review for this product, and was anticipating being disappointed.....how wrong could I have been!
Sound quality is surprisingly very good, and I am a bit of an audio freak, so praise indeed. Even the bass is respectable, considering the speaker is about 2cm deep. Not sure it'll hack drum 'n bass, but can't knock it for the size & weight.
While it won't replace a dedicated iPod dock & speakers at home, its more than handy for weekends away, or holidays.
If you need a very slim, fairly lightweight speaker for an Ipod, you could do much much worse!
Excellent Design but Interference a Major Problem
I was looking for a small, very light, speaker for my new ipod nano that I could take on holiday and use in places like hotels. The StreetParty Size Zero seemed like an ideal speaker for the job, with a reported weight of 300g and dimensions not much bigger than an average paperback book.
It is indeed a very small speaker. Thin and light. The ipod nano fits very well on the dock, though note if you keep your ipod in a protective case like I do you may have to take it out of the case to quickly get a good connection.
Sound quality is excellent, and the volume should be more than enough for most purposes. But here's the problem - there is quite a bit of interference (probably coming from the adaptor). Sometimes it sounds like it's picking up morse code, sometimes it's more of an irritating buzz. When listening to music, particularly at high volumes, you won't notice it. If however you are a fan of podcasts or audiobooks then this speaker makes them unlistenable.
I didn't know if this was an isolated problem or not, so I tried it in different locations around the house with the same result. Then I took it back to the Retailer and they tried it in the store with the same result. As a final test they tried a new speaker fresh out of the box and the same thing happened. It's disappointing becuase this really is a great looking product.
Sort of works with ipod touch 2nd generation!
It's a nice looking product, but at first I thought it didn't work at all with the ipod touch 2nd gen. When you put the ipod touch into the docking station the sound just comes out of the internal speakers, the speaker system of the Gear 4 don't kick in. I realise now that to deactivate the internal speakers of the ipod touch you need to have something in the headphone jack, but because the headphone jack is on the same side as the docking/connection port of the ipod touch you can't have it in the Gear 4 system at the same time! So to use the speakers you have to take the ipod touch off of the Gear 4 speakers and attach a double ended lead between the ipod touch & Gear 4 speakers & then it works fine, although doesn't look as good! You don't have this problem with ipod nano for example as the Gear 4 speakers kick in automatically, it's just any ipod with internal speakers built in. You can use the Gear 4 to charge your ipod touch, but not to play music through whilst its attached...unless I've missed something!
