Fantastic yet useless
I have been pleased with a previous Dyson that finally gave up on me last weekend so I did not really look much further than their latest product range. Owning a dog and not being a fan of uprights, it was a choice between the DC20 Animal and the new DC21 cylinders. The DC21 won due to the "few" reviews I managed to find elsewhere on the internet. Having read the simple instructions, I got to work with the main motorhead attachment in the lounge - the DC21 is extremely fast and easy to use, making short work of the living space. Fantastic. However, when it came to using the other attachments, the DC21 is rendered useless. The small, lightweight plastic tools that come with the unit do not "fix" into place, but slide into the heavy extension unit (having removed the motorhead). The excellent suction power of the DC21 then becomes it's downfall, as soon as you get to work in the harder to reach areas, or on the stairs, the tools simply work their way out of the unit within seconds. The heavy extension unit that these slide into also makes it backbreaking. How Dyson ever managed to let this simple design flaw pass their stringent testing I do not know - and neither do they apparently after a quick support call. If you plan to use the DC21 in an open living area all well and good, you can't go wrong. If you need to use it for any other areas like most of the population, you'll need a second vacuum cleaner that has tools and attachments that work.
Dyson DC21 feedback
As always the Amazon customer service was excellent. I ordered this Dyson using the express delivery service and it was delivered as promised.
As far as the Dyson is concerned, i tried it out as soon as i received it and was very impressed with the product. Its my 3rd Dyson and i do prefere the latest incarnation.
The motorhead is excellent at revitalising depressed carpet and does a superb job at cleaning
The clear waste bucket does need to be changed frequently since for some reason they [Dyson] have reduced the capacity of the bin.
The cleaner is very easy to use and all attachments when connected worked very well indeed. I fitted all the attachments to test this specifically especially in light of adverse feedback given in teh reviews above, but i have to say i was impressed. All working and fitted well.
very happy with the product and service from Amazon. Great value and great service from Amazon!
Major niggles
Having bought the previous "Motorhead" model about 5 years ago (and being very pleased with it), I had no hesitation in buying the latest model.
But within a few seconds of using it, it was apparent that little of the much vaunted Dyson engineering thinking had gone into it. Firstly, the new unit is much heavier and larger than the previous model. The motorhead unit doesn't even attempt to get under furniture. And lugging it about quickly becomes a new Olympic sport. Secondly, the motorhead on/off is located on the actual motorhead unit. This is advertised as a "feature". But coupled with the main unit on/off on the actual cylinder and you're forever walking back and forwards to turn off the damn thing. Now what was wrong with keeping both controls at the top of the rigid part of the hose? (ie. from where you are pushing the unit). Speaking of which, the 1.5m rigid hose thingy (don't know it's technical name) is now telescopic. Which is great for storage, but makes it three times as heavy when you are using it! Thirdly, the hose doesn't come out of the front of the cylinder, but slightly to the side. Which means as you pull the unit along it has a tendency to crash drunkenly into the walls and catch in doorways. Fourthly, the tiny thin attachment which I use for edges, stairs, and inaccessible areas does not fit properly. It falls out of the hose if you so much as look at it. Some tape wound round the end of it has cure the problem but even so, the much enlarged hose still makes it hard work. Fifthly, the max mark on the cylinder is now nowhere near the top. This necessitates emptying the cylinder more often. A complete house clean involved emptying the unit seven times! Now, I know this is a new cleaner and will on it's first couple of goes pick up a lot more than normal, but the fact remains the cylinder has a smaller capacity than before. I've already started to go above the max mark because I just can't be bothered to keep emptying it so often.
A couple of these complaints may seem like small points. But when you add the whole lot up, they become major niggles. Reading the whole review you might think I detest this cleaner. But I don't. I still think the Dyson cylinder in conjunction with the motorhead unit is an unbeatable combination at cleaning carpets. I just wish they had put it through some kind of design/testing procedure. If you're still thinking of buying this unit, I strongly advise you to "test drive" it first.
