DC31 Animal

DC31 Animal is the most powerful handheld with no loss of suction, and one of the latest generation of Dyson handhelds. It comes with a motorised brush bar for powerful pet hair removal, making it ideal for homes with pets and for cleaning pet hair from the inside of cars. The dual power mode on DC31 Animal gives 10 minutes of constant high suction for large cleans, or 6 minutes at 70% higher suction for stubborn dirt.

DC31 Animal comes with a combination accessory tool with wide debris nozzle to pick up crumbs and large particles, which converts to a brush tool for dusting delicate surfaces and computer keyboards. It also includes a crevice tool for cleaning skirting boards, picture rails and in-between furniture. The 22.2V lithium ion battery in DC31 Animal recharges up to three times faster than others.

DC31 Animal is powered by the new Dyson digital motor, which is smaller, lighter and more power-efficient than conventional electric motors.

Powerful
I've tried other handheld vacuums in the past, and they have all been rubbish. Great idea but never had the power to make them worthwhile, as invariably it would be easier to persevere with a dustpan and brush. This Dyson however I'm pleased to say doesn't have this problem. The 'no loss of suction' claim really makes a difference on a unit this size. I have found myself using it for all sorts of jobs.
We have hard floors throughout most of our house, so it was brought mainly for the rugs, sofa and stairs. It cleans all of these brilliantly, and as we have an 18 month old child it gets plenty of use. Its great on the stairs as I no longer have to lug a full size hoover up and down. It's also not bad at cleaning the kitchen floor!

I was a little worried about the battery life after reading some of the other comments on here, but am pleased to say it has yet to run out on me. I've whipped around all the areas of the house before and it has been fine. The linear battery technology works great as it doesn't lose power even when the battery is running low. To be honest if the job is any bigger than 10 minutes work then you really shouldn't be relying on a handheld hoover. Your arm starts to ache after this long if nothing else! My only slight criticism would be it takes longer to do the large rug in the lounge than I had originally anticipated, but this is due to the width of the attachment being much narrower than a full size hoover, rather than any design fault per se.

Glad I spent a little more for the animal version, because the motorised attachment is the best for cleaning carpets. I also bought an extra wide nozzle, but this is not as good as the motorised one. Yes it is expensive, but I don't think any of the other manufacturers have an equivalent product. Also this has now become our main hoover, so the £200 full size hoover sitting under the stairs is now looking like a waste of money. Recommended.

Best Handheld Ever!
Pros - Lightweight with powerfull suction

This is the best portable handheld vacuum I've had or used.
The high suction along with the 10 minute battery life allows you to spot clean or even to clean a car with ease. Also, has a boost button for extra suction for stubborn dirt!
The Turbo Brush tool is excellent and really allows you to clean carpets and fabrics.
In one word....FANTASTIC

Great for picking up after our animals (and my fiancée)
We have rats (deliberately, as pets). Unfortunately, one of the things they're prone to doing is knocking their bedding out of their cage onto the floor. Given that I'm ridiculously lazy, this then ends up staying on the floor before being trampled through the living room. Not particularly pleasant.

The Dyson DC-31 Animal is fantastic for dealing with this. It lives down by their cage and gets pulled out whenever we see any mess on the floor. Because it's so small it's stupidly easy to pick up and run across any small bits of mess, leaving us with a house that doesn't have rat bedding strewn across it. Our "main" vacuum is also a Dyson, the wee little DC 23 stowaway Animal, but we were finding we just weren't getting it out for the small jobs. The DC 31 Animal is just so much nicer for those little jobs. The extra bit of power you can get it to give you when you need it is fantastic too (although I haven't really needed it as yet, the standard power is perfectly good enough). Contrary to other reviewers I've also found it really hand for doing the stairs.

The main reason for getting the Animal rather than the normal version wasn't because of our rats though - it was because of my fiancée. She has wonderfully curly hair, but unfortunately it has a habit of coming out and making a mess all over the house. The motorised brushes you get with the Animals deal with this fantastically, and I couldn't recommend them highly enough.
