Disappointed Customer
I had an old IDE hard disk that I needed to get some data off so I looked around and found the Allcam Hard Drive Enclosure. The Photo made it look cool, the light on the front seemed useful and the price couldn't be complained about so I ordered one.

The unit arrived a couple of days later and although it felt very cheap I wasn't too upset - you do get what you pay for. The thing that did bother me was the smoke that poured out the back when I plugged it in! Needless to say, it didn't work. After a lengthy call with their customer support, Allcam agreed to send a replacement circuit once I removed the existing one and send it back to them.

Rather than wait for the 5 days return trip I thought I'd just order another one. That arrived this morning and although I'm pleased to report there was no smoke, it didn't work. The USB light on the enclosure lit up but the PC refused to detect it.

I've given up with this product and I'm off to buy a brand I've heard of before. This may be a very cheap product, but for me it really was a false economy.

Totally useless
I needed to extract data from some old hard drives so, rather than install them in PCs, I thought this Hard Drive Enclosure was the answer. I tried with 3 drives and only one of them worked. The other two, Windows XP Pro recognises them as a Mass Storage Device, but Device Manager says no drivers are installed for this device. Windows tries to load drivers, but fails everytime.
I have confirmed that the drives are OK, because I have now installed them in a PC (one as master and the other as slave). I now have access to all my data - but no thanks to this device.
I only hope they will take this useless piece of kit back !

Beautiful external hard drive case
I had this case for one month now. The quality is very good, the design and the finish are both 1st class. The retail package is also quite good. Fixing a hard drive inside is easy and fast, I managed to get it done in 5 mins without reading any instructions (the included instruction is difficult to follow anyway). Switch on the power and connect the USB cable, my 4-years old computer detected the external hard drive quickly and automatically add it as a new drive in "My Computer". I transfered all my downloaded MP3s and Divx movies inside to free some space in the internal hard drive. The data transfer speed is quite good, 30GB data was transfered in around 1 hour. The fan noisy is not too bad. I also like the idea of placing all the control button in front, it is really convenient. With the four colour lights flashing, it looks absolutely beautiful! In one world, this is one of the best purchase i have ever made.
