Very Good But....
This player does indeed have the ability to make a good quality DVD look really good but can make a poor quality one look even worse.
However....
It can not play back a 4:3 aspect DVD unless you set the HDMI to the lowest video mode and in that mode (and several others), the XDE functions are not available.
How they managed to miss the correct playback of 4:3 material is beyond me...
My Toshiba HD-DVD player can do it....
Next, as already mentioned by others, there is no resume playback unless you leave the disc in with the unit on.
Not the end of the world but if you are watching TV programs on DVD with several episodes a disc resume comes in handy if you only want to watch one episode at a time without having to remember where you were.
Unit front display.
It only shows the chapter number on the front LED display. Extra DVD info can only be displayed on screen.
I must admit with the units flaws I was close to sending it back but for viewing my anamorphic good quality discs it does a good job and of course can be made region free...
- open the tray
- type 2403960
- press 9
- close the tray
- put the player in standby and back on again
Great picture quality, but Philips TV owners beware
There is currently a compatibility issue between the XDE player and Philips televisions - well, certainly mine which is one of the latest LCD models, a 37PFL9603. These televisions can't display anything from the player when connected via HDMI cable. Toshiba are aware of this and are shipping a software update for the DVD player which will hopefully solve the problem.
Frustrations with getting it to work aside, I've had a go at viewing the picture from the XDE player on my DELL 24" PC monitor. I must say that the improvements are amazing and in SHARP mode, you can almost believe you're watching a BluRay disc. It's certainly good enough for me to look forward to bringing new life to my collection of film DVDs, although you won't see much improvement on DVDs of older TV shows.
Others have commented that it's quite a cheap looking device and certainly the disc tray and remote are poor and the display on the front of the player not particularly informative. Still, value for money counts at this end of the market and so I'd wholeheartedly recommend it - especially if you've got a huge DVD collection and want to avoid being tempted to replace them all with BluRay discs!
All your existing films again - only better!!!
In a word - Fantastic!!!
Just bought the new XDE player and it's great. We've had a HD TV for quite a while but have been using our existing DVD player. Value for money this has to be the best DVD player you can buy. Since we had it, we've been watching all of our existing DVD's because it's like watching a different film. Everything seems that much better.
I'd seriously recommend this to anyone looking for a new DVD machine. We had almost bought a Blue Ray player but I'm glad we didn't - not only is this machine cheaper, we're able to play all of our existing DVD's on it and I can't imagine they could look much better than they do now!
