Make sure your bike will be appropriate for this product before buying
I bought this seat on the basis of a 5 star review and the idea of my baby being placed between my arms in front of me and thus better balance and communication (and this is indeed the best thing about this seat). The main problem with this product is the lack of space for both you and your baby which means that the ride becomes very uncomfortable for you (I got really saddle sore - because of the new riding position). I found that my baby's head touched my chest so even though he is only 18 mths, in a few months time it will be very uncomfortable for him. Even though I have a mountain bike I'm not able to fix the seat to the bike stem. This is the preferred position if it has to be fixed any further back it is majorly problematic.
so so much better than child bike seats that attatch anywhere else
i bought this child seat for my son who is a fidget and a chatter box because when sitting behind me both of our conbined weight makes the front wheel really light and unstable and when he fidgets, oh boy, i have almost dropped it a few times. with him sat between my legs he can chat to me as much as he likes AND GET A RESPONSE! he can see where we are going and interact with me about his suroundings and he can fidget to his hearts contents because the weight is more evenly distributed. this also helps in the handling of the bike and i feel i have more control. i also feel its safer because he is between my legs and arm and it just feels more protective, i have also used it for my older nephew and although he is too tall to be on it, as long as he keeps his head to the side, it by no means is a problem and because he is older he is also talking to me about the obsticals and dangers ahead - curbs, people walking, crossing over, driveways... etc and i found it became educational for him and informative to me (and his parents) to assess what he see as problems and how he would handle them as he rides his own bike when out with his parents on their bikes.
i would really recomend this as an exceptionally good buy.
bad bits...
1 if your over weight you end up being jammed behind the child seat trying to reach the handle bars. i did over come that.
2 being short means your child height becomes a problem sooner rather than latter but getting them to sit to one side works fantasticly
3 child becomes the wind breaker so wearing warm clothes is a must.
4 getting on and off is not straight forward but making sure you have shorts/trouser is a must as you end up cocking you leg over the back wheel.
5 you end up riding with you knees appart due to the seat being in you way - again shorts/trousers are a must.
6 childs hair blowing in your face - arrrr this really annoys me so tops with hoods works - pony tails dont work you still get whiped or the odd one in your eye.
i turned the bracket on the bottom upside down to gain a few more precious cm of height - worked a treat.
ok i really mean this after all the little problems i have mentioned let me tell you i now ride my bike minimum of twice a week and my son begs to go on. where as before when he was behind me neither of us was that keen and during his first 2years i hardly rode my bike at all. nothing except the child seat has changed im still in the same house and job and i cannot blame not riding on my life but i can state that having this child seat HAS DEFINATLY CHANGED MY LIFE because i ride loads more and feel so mush more confident than before. its ammazing and worth every penny i spent on it.
Take care when ordering
As stated before be careful that this seat will fit on your bike. My bike is of the type described but there is no way the seat will fit in a position that will allow me to reach the handle bars! Very dissapointed as had high hopes for this seat.
