One bar goes a long way
For the vast majority of my rides I will make do with banana's and water because energy bars and drinks are quite pricey. However, when I entered the Prince of Wales Hospice Cyclothon this year I took a couple of energy bars and a couple of energy drinks. I don't know how much the placebo effect was at play but the energy products did seem to give me a boost. The bars are surprisingly filling too. My friend and I did the longest of the 3 rides available and I found that 2 bars were easily enough to satisfy my hunger for the full 100k. They're smaller than banana's too and therefore easier to slip into pockets. Next time I take energy bars on a ride I think I might cut a slit in the top of the packet so that if I fancy a snack on the move they will be easier to unwrap (my friend is well balanced enough to sit up on the bike and cycle with no hands on the handle bars but I aren't so I have to open any wrappers with one hand when on the move). The Go bar isn't my favourite of the admittedly very few energy bars I've tried but it is one of the most reasonably priced. I've tried Powerbars, Zipvit bars and Go bars and the Zipvit was my favourite because it tasted the nicest.
Energy gels are good also. I like these because they are easy to open on the move. They tend to have two V shaped cut outs in the top of the packet so that you can tear the top off with your teeth and then simply squeeze it into your mouth. Mark Cavendish uses gels a lot. If it's good enough for Cav it's good enough for me. To be honest the only gel I've tried so far is Zipvit blackcurrent flavour and although the flavour wasn't unpleasant it was too strong. It tasted like one of those dilutable drinks when you don't put enough water in. I will continue to buy gels to find out which one I like the best.
