Synopsis
In Adrian Lyne's FLASHDANCE, a young woman, Alex (Jennifer Beals), strives to achieve success as a classical dancer, but economic forces require her to work as a welder by day and an exotic dancer by night. Standing in her way is an abundance of profound social obstacles, not the least of which is her boss at the welding factory, Nick (Michael Nouri), who is also her boyfriend. Alex strives to be accepted into a prestigious ballet academy, and she is furious when she realizes that her boyfriend might be pulling strings for her behind the scenes. Along the road to self-discovery and independence, Alex also struggles to accept love, come to terms with her own stubbornness, and find the inner strength to turn her lofty dreams into reality. Edited for maximum rhythmic impact, FLASHDANCE is full of glistening bodies and metallic surfaces, powered by Giorgio Moroder's throbbing music and one hit song after another: Michael Sembello's 'Maniac', Karen Karmen's 'Manhunt', and, notably, Irene Cara's Oscar-winning theme song, 'Flashdance... What A Feeling'. FLASHDANCE marks the first coproduction between Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, who geared the film toward the MTV generation.

Iconic feel good film
This isn't the sort of film I would normally watch, but after being persuaded (forced!) by my ex girlfriend to watch 'Dirty Dancing' (which I have to admit was a pretty good film!); I thought I would be a bit more open minded and gave this film a viewing when it was on Sky Movies. I had seen brief clips of the film from 'The Full Monty' (they study the film for dance moves) but that was the only reference I had for it.
The film is about a young woman (Alex) who works as a welder by day and a dancer in a bar at night. She has ambitions to become a professional dancer, but having only learnt dancing by studying books and videos, and not by attendance at a dance school; she finds a huge barrier to pursuing her dream. There is a particularly poignant scene in the film where she visits a dance school to obtain an application form and feels completely out of her depth, which I'm sure many people, including myself, can relate to.
Although Alex is the central character in the film, her friend Jeanie has an ambition to become a professional ice skater, and her friend Richie has an ambition to become a professional stand up comedian, and they all work in the same bar together.
The film is basically about pursuing your dreams and I find it very inspirational. It's not all plain sailing, Alex and her friends have to overcome many obstacles, not least of which are fear and self-doubt. Despite being extremely talented, each character shows their vulnerability and insecurity.
The soundtrack to the film is amazing, just as 'The time of your life' is synonymous with 'Dirty Dancing', 'What a feeling' is the hit song for this film.
I'm surprised there aren't many reviews for this film as I thought it would be extremely popular. It's a great film and it is described by one person on the special features of the dvd, as a 'Rocky' for females. The final scene is really heart warming and I think males would enjoy this film, just as much as females. (Not just because of the beautiful women!) It's not just about dancing and a young girl falling in love, the film can apply to anyone who has a dream and who has to overcome many obstacles to pursue that dream.
What a feeling
Can I really have first watched this 26 years ago? That's scary. It's the music that carries the story of a female welder whose secret passion is to become a "real" ballet dancer rather than the burlesque entertainer she is in her evenings. With the help of her boss and an old lady encouraging her ambition, there is little doubt as to the outcome. What struck me this time round was quite how unpleasant the female character was to her new boyfriend, how petulant and ungrateful, to the point of physically attacking him and his property when he annoys her. Okay, it's only a film, but perhaps we've moved on since 1983. I got a little bored during the song and dance routines; men are unlikely to. A classic, definitely.
I haven't got round to looking at the extras on the DVD yet. Perhaps they're for die-hard fans.
