Black Metal - Alive and Kicking
This is the black metal supergroup put together by Immortal front man Abbath and featuring the guitarist from Enslaved with the bassist and drummer from Gorgoroth. It sounds nothing like any of those bands, if I was to offer a modern day comparison it would probably be Satyricon. However, the band I think of most as I'm playing this, is Bathory. Abbath's vocal is very similar to Quorthon's from the Under The Sign Of The Black Mark / Blood Fire Death era and the music reminds me of his later releases, Hammerheart or Twilight Of The Gods. You don't need to be a fan of Black Metal to like this though - Its up tempo, with catchy songs (a la Satyricon) and great lyrics from Immortal lyricist Demonaz. Abbath also plays in a Motorhead tribute band, and there are Motorhead influences here too. This is definately one of the best CD's of 2006, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
Abbath and his merry super group
this is a amazing album start to finish, its different enough from immortal to tells its a different band but simular enough to work out if you didnt know its half of immmortal, the riffs are strong as you would expect from enslaveds guitarist and the solos are air guitar worthy, its hard to put this album in a catagorey I are a bit like motorhead but with a black metal edge deffinitly worth the buy theres some very quarthorne esq lyric style n vocals like far beyond the quiet, in the list of the best albums of 2006 metal lives on
I - Between Two Worlds
`Between Two Worlds' is the debut album for a brand new project featuring some of the finest talent from the infamous Norwegian Black metal scene. The band's name is I and amongst their ranks is the legendary IMMORTAL vocalist Abbath along with members of SAHG and ENSLAVED.
By the time you've listended to opener `The Storm I Ride' and next track `Warriors' you'll recognise that this certainly isn't out and out black metal. Instead, it's a much slower, melodic take on Black metal but still with the necessary dark, atmospheric feel. On most of the songs, you can actually tell just about every word that Abbath is saying. Actually, at times, he sounds more like Lemmy than the frontman of IMMORTAL!
On the title track, `Between Two Worlds' the sound is a little closer to that of IMMORTAL, except for the fact that Abbath actually sings the chorus rather than talks/grunts as he does most of the time! The lyrics are about all things Northern, a great dreamy track destined to take you to a place far away (probably somewhere cold if Abbath has his way). The speed is turned up a couple of notches for `Battalions', which is the most IMMORTAL sounding track on the album and apart from album closer `Cursed We Are', it's also the fastest.
`Mountains' is another track with a more epic feel to it, built around an excellent main guitar riff. `Days of North Winds' follows and while it has a typical IMMORTAL song title, the song itself is more of a ploddy affair that just misses the mark. The highlight of the album is penultimate track `Far Beyond the Quiet'. This is a majestic epic fit for any IMMORTAL or ENSLAVED album, a beautifully crafted song.
Overall, `Between Two Worlds' is a decent album with a superb array of riffs and some great melodies. At times though, the albums lack of any real aggression will leave many of the Black Metal worshipping listeners just asking for that little something extra. The production of the album is a little weak with a thin sounding percussion moslty to blame, and many of the contempory sounding guitar solos don't quite fit the general mood. For sure, IMMORTAL fans will be glad to hear Abbath in action again, but `Between Two Worlds' will act as little more than an appetizer for a potential new album from IMMORTAL themselves following news of their recent re-formation. Fingers crossed.
