Play like Formby - Avoid this Book!
This book will not help you to learn to play like Formby - at best you will learn to accompany Formby songs. The problem? Well, Formby had many Ukulele Banjos tuned in different keys. The authors of this book have transposed each song to a common tuning. But the chord shapes you play are no-longer suitable for playing the chord variations that typified Formby solos. I struggled for four years with this book before working out that what was written down was not what Formby was playing, and it delayed my learning of the Formby technique for that long too. If you want to learn to play like Formby, join a Formby appreciation society and get some instruction from a fellow plucker - to date, I haven't seen a good George Formby music book.
Happy plucking!
OK For Fun
The strong points about this book are that it gives not just the banjo-uke tabs, but piano and guitar accompanyment too. The last review was a perhaps little harsh, though it is true some of the pieces are transposed from the keys Formby uses in his films and records, and some of the chord structures are changed a little to go with the piano accompanyment in the book... but this is true of most songbooks for most artists and is not unusual! If you want Formby-Style then of course you need to learn formby strum tricks from the George Formby Society and associated videos or tutors, they also do a songbook of Formby chords. Saying that around half the pieces in this book use the right keys anyway. This book is actually a great complement to other sources, it gives ideas for fill in chords to make the pieces more interesting, and is a must if you want accompanyment or notes for the melody. It also contains songs not available from society songbook... so in short I think a good buy at just £9.99.
Our George,Hee Hee!
Not bad I had to change some of the keys ie. relevant chords to what george did them in.But apart from that had a lot of fun with this book.
