An excellent start in a new rock drummer's life
The sub title of this book claims to offer everything you need to know to play like a pro. Joel Rothman has pretty much hit the target with this clear, excellent value for money, beginner's guide to Rock Drumming.
The early sections on drum basics are good, with helpful advice on choosing the right sticks, the right seats, and getting a good sound out of a snare and bass drum.
Drum music notation is introduced via "clapping exercises" which are easy to follow. The companion CD guides the reader/listener through the exercises.
The basics of a Rock Beat are Hi-hats, snare and bass drums. Joel Rothman introduces these three elements in turn allowing a beginner to settle in to some real drumming.
The drum exercises in the book are written in drum notation which will take the new drummer a little time to get used to, but the CD has all the exercises that are in the book, and it's relatively easy to follow them.
Joel Rothman gets the reader up to speed very quickly in terms of pages in the book; from clapping exercises to Rock Drumming in four pages!
It might have been helpful for the book to intimate to the student that this jump will take a lot of practice and a lot of time - perhaps 2 - 3 months for a complete novice.
The basic exercises are comprehensive and once the student has mastered them he/she will be ready to tackle more complex rhythms and should be able to play with learning musicians of other disciplines.
In summary, an excellent introductory text and CD and at around 6 pounds Sterling it reflects superb value.
Play Rock Drums
Absolutely brilliant book for beginners. It's really clear and easy to understand. The dvd that comes with it is great too. Demonstrations always help :) Don't make the same mistake I did though and buy "Step One: Teach Yourself Drums" as well. Like the reader from Scotland says, they are EXACTLY the same book, word for word. But change the cover and the title and hey presto... now they can sell two of it *rolls eyes*. Unfortunately, I bought them in April, before that review was up lol. Nevermind. But anyways, both books are fab, would definitely recommend them x
Play Rock Drums
This is a really good book for a beginner and starts with very basic information on care of the drum kit, how to play etc right up to fairly difficult music for the beginner. Please note however, that this book is exactly the same as Teach Yourself Drums apart from the cover.
