Editorial Reviews

CD Description
It should have come as no surprise that, after leaving behind the strictures of the classic boy band New Edition, BobbyBrown would re-emerge as a prototype of New Jack Swing sex appeal. DON'T BE CRUEL might be somewhat tame, however, as it was still a few years before the era of unabashed rumpshakers like Bell Biv Devoe's "Poison". But the hard funk slapped over melodic, synth-heavy production gives tracks like "MyPerogative" and "I'll Be Good To You" a mature, club-friendly quality sorely lacking in his former group's sunshiney tunes. Still, singles like the title track and "Every Little Step" are highly effective as catchy pop hits, having been targeted for massive radio success. But what's most revealing about DON'T BE CRUEL is hearing a more youthful Bobby Brown crooning like a resurrection of teen idol Frankie Lymon on ballads like "Take It Slow". DON'T BE CRUEL is a remarkable solo debut from a singer with an insatiable combination of raw talent and unrefined charisma.

Customer Reviews

Bobby Brown - The one and only classic4
To be honest, what can you say? When this album hit both here in the UK and abroad it made waves. For many My Prerogative, Rock Wit'Cha, Roni and Every Little Step made you want to simply jump around. For me, Don't Be Cruel and the accompanying video made the album. Absolutely brilliant.

After listening to this CD I went out and bought Ralph T, BBD, Johnny G and various New Edition albums. If you want a trip back then buy this album. Easy listening, easy lyrics, easy.

Bobby Brown should never have faded away and in all honsety, should come back now and receive PROPER promotion.

Had to have it5
Had this on tape when it first came out in 1988 or 9 and I just had to have it on CD. Bobby Brown at his best a must for any late 80's R&B collection.

Bobby Brown had potential4
Bobby Brown had potential and he showed it with this gem of an album. Hits such as Don't Be Cruel,My Prerogative and Every Little Step made him a massive draw on both sides of the Atlantic. Even the lesser known tracks such as Roni, and I'll Be Good To You had massive appeal. I just can't figure out why he threw such talent away with his outrageous lifestyle.
