Customer Reviews
Dreadful (apart from the tennis)
I've always wanted to see this match and the tennis does not disappoint. Gerulaitis and Borg were simply breathtaking. The whole match was played at an incredible pace; at times Gerulaitis didn't even bother to sit down at the change of ends, such was his eagerness to get on with the game. It's one of those matches which really could have gone either way, right up to the last point. Watching it, you can't help but think how sad it was that Gerulaitis, such a talented and charismatic player, died so young and so tragically of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The DVD, alas, doesn't do them justice. The picture quality is pretty ropey, the camerawork is positively primitive (lots of shots from behind netting) and, of course, there are no action replays. The commentary is surprisingly bad, too - very little analysis of the technical side of the game, and an awful lot of stating the obvious. Still, all of this could have been forgiven if the All England Club had at least had the grace to throw in a few extras. What about the players' press conferences after the match? Some comments from people who were there and saw the game? Forget it - all we get is the information that Borg went on to win the tournament. So, all in all, a pretty shoddy DVD - but magical tennis.
