Product Description

First published in June 1959 and reprinted 4 times before being revised and republished in 1971 by Model and Allied Publications in hardback and written by Vic Smeed, this 128 page volumes is intended for the benefit of the "average" modeller and does not pretend to advise the expert. It should provide a welcome source of guidance and inspiration to the beginner, the dabbler and the not-so-expert. It is written entirely from practical experience, with a certainty that success will follow the efforts of anyone who follows the procedure described employing care, patience and common sense. The book provides a wealth of information on hull construction, materials in common use [in the early 1970s], suitable tools, different types of motor and their best employment, simple approach to radio control, boat fittings, couplings, shafts and propellers, superstructures, painting and finishing, unorthodox models including submarines; and a valuable selection of "do's and don't." The author, Vic Smeed, was editor of Model Boats at the time when this was published, a magazine which was enjoying a world reputation as the leading model boat magazine. His own output of models was at that point phenomenal, and with access to the problems of a wide readership, he was in the position to produce a book of great value and insight. Chapters: 1. This and That; 2. Design; 3. Wherewithal; 4. Hard Chine Hulls; 5. Bread-and-Butter Hulls; 6. Planked Construction; 7. Glassfibre; 8. Metal and Paper Hulls; 9. Electric Motors; 10. Internal Combustion; 11. Other Motive Power; 12. Shafts, Couplings and Fittings; 13. Superstructure and Fittings; 14. Painting and Finishing; 15. Hydroplanes; 16. Unorthodox Models; 17. Radio Control; 18. 50 Do's and Don'ts for the Beginner; Appendices including power boat classification, M.P.B.A Clubs; and available designs by the author.
