About the Author
Born in Scotland, Rosalin Barker is a graduate of Birmingham University. Most of her working life was spent in university adult education, tutoring for Cambridge, Open, Leeds and Hull universities, and as a research fellow at Essex University. She retired in 1999 as tutor-organiser in Whitby, for Hull University, of which she is now an Honorary Fellow.
Her research interests include demographic, urban and maritime history, on which she has lectured and written extensively.
She has two children and one granddaughter, and has lived on the outskirts of Whitby, her husband's birthplace, for twenty-four years, though she has known the town for half a century.
