Manufacturer's Description
The Aspire One is a brand new product and, despite its size, it is not just another notebook: it is a stylish all-new digital device designed to deliver continuous access to the internet no matter where you are.
Let's get connected
Small and smart, the Aspire One takes you wherever you want to be and keeps you connected when you get there. The Aspire One comes with 802.11b/g WiFi built-in as standard for easy access to available wireless network. The result is always the same: you are online in an instant and can stay there as long as you want.
In addition, Acer Signal Up technology ensures maximum quality and stability to the wireless signal.
Let's get organized
The Aspire One is great for getting things done: whether you are checking your mail, managing your online bank account or chatting with friends, the Aspire One offers a simple, intuitive Linux or Windows XP® Home interface that clearly organizes everything you need to surf, work or simply have fun. The Linux pre-installed software is separated by functions and presented in 4 distinct areas on the screen – Connect, Works, Fun and Files – that is so simple it’s impossible to get confused: the easier it is to get things done, the simpler it is to enjoy life.
*Example of Linux operating system interface.
Ergonomics and reduced dimensions do not mean the view isn’t spectacular: the Aspire One has an 8.9” CrystalBrite LED backlit display with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels. Integrated in the top of the screen is the unique Acer CrystalEye webcam for live video streaming, video chats and conferences.
Choose your Style
The Aspire One uses colour to combine connectivity with inimitable style. Available in sapphire blue and seashell white – the Aspire One gives an individual and quite distinctive look and feel that matches the style and personality of its lucky owner.
Bits & bytes for data freedom
The Aspire One is equipped with Intel® Atom™ processor, Linpus™ Linux® Lite or Windows XP® Home, and comes with 512MB or 1GB of RAM memory installed.
There are two alternatives for data storage: a NAND flash module of 8GB or a 120GB internal HDD. In addition the Aspire One reads 5 different types of memory card – Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD-Picture Card – for absolute data freedom.
To increase storage capacity, the Aspire One features the unique Smart File Manager, a simple solution that instantly and seamlessly merges extra storage from any SD card inserted in the 2nd SD card slot into the memory available to the user.
Expanding your available storage has never been so easy.
Simple, Sophisticated Software
Acer has worked hard on improving the user experience by designing a friendly, easy-to-use and comprehensive interface that simplifies interaction between users and the Aspire One by taking a more natural approach to screen layout and functionality.
The Linpus™ Linux® Lite version is the result, guiding and accompanying even novice users through the Internet in an intuitive, “virus-safe” and super-responsive Linux environment.
The Aspire One features the One Mail software suite that lets you manage up to six of your email accounts with a single application interface, including your office accounts. A small icon to the right of the message quickly and clearly shows the appropriate mail account. Nothing could be simpler to replace push e-mail services without using a corporate server.
The Aspire One uses Messenger for Instant Messaging, an application that allows users to simultaneously access Skype, Microsoft Messenger and various other instant messaging services. The software can be used with the integrated video camera for instant video-chats and video conferences.
The Aspire One series comes preinstalled with Linpus™ Linux® Lite version or Windows XP® Home. Furthermore, additional software such as OpenOffice 2.3, One Mail, Messenger, Acer eRecovery Management, Acer Launch Manager, Adobe® Reader®, McAfee® Internet Security Suite Trial Version, Microsoft® Office Trial 2007 are also installed.
The Aspire One comes with a 1-year carry in warranty which can be extended to 2 years with Acer Advantage.

Absolutely Ace!
I'm very happy with this tiny little laptop; very happy indeed! All my software, much of it sophisticated and resource-hungry, works perfectly. No problems installing any software using either my desktop's DVD via Wi-Fi, or using a USB flash drive. Wi-Fi is excellent, with a very sensitive transceiver having much better range than my desktop's card, which is connected to a high-gain antenna! The dual-head graphics is very good indeed, allowing me to plug-into the AV system at work and deliver presentations in any resolution I like, whilst reading my speaker's notes on the One's own screen, so don't worry about the 1024 x 600 limit of the One's screen; it's not a problem. It's so convenient to carry around, and having a large capacity SDHC card inserted gives peace of mind re: backups of important stuff when on the move. This is a triumph of miniaturisation; any smaller would be silly. The keyboard is excellent, the screen bright and sharp, the camera works well in low light too, and I love it!. Sound quality is what one might expect from small speakers; if you want better you'll need bigger and heavier.
Excellent
I was going to buy the Linux version, but chickened out, since I had a lot of windows applications that I thought I might spend hours trying to get to work. For example, the Aspire One Users' website implies that getting your GPRS Dongle to work under Linux is iffy.
Anyway, I pre-ordered my XP Home model (and so got it at a cheaper price than currently) and it has been worth the wait. Easy to set up, boots quite quickly under XP Home (much faster than my XP Pro laptop) and the keyboard and screen quality are very good. Wireless connectivity seems as good around my home as my grown-up laptop.
I've not yet been able to assess the battery life.
The XP version comes with MS Works as well as the trial version of Office 2007, but I've decided to give OpenOffice a try instead.
A geeky check-weigh turns it in at 1040 gm: so just over a kilo.
This fills the bill perfectly for those restricted-space train and cattle-class airline journeys. An all-round good buy.
An Outstanding Netbook
Having been used to 15 or 17 inch laptops for the last few years, this seemed too good to be true. As the owner of 2 x Acer laptops, I was confident in the brand for reliability & value, and the Amazon.co.uk price is VERY competitive.
With a whopping 120Gb hard drive and 1Gb of RAM (expandable to 1.5 - using standard laptop SO DIMM modules), this little beauty is a marvel. CPU runs at 1.6GHz, so doesn't slouch at anything - the Office 2007 package you get (trial sudent/teacher edition - so no Outlook) runs very well. The small 9-inch screen is very clear, and with 3 x USBs you can hook up any device you want - obviously an external DVD/CD RW is a necessary purchase if you need to load programmes/software via that means, 'cos it doesn't have one. This version has XP as the operating system - there is a LINUX version if that's your preference.
I had a Fujitsu-Siemens netbook through work, and I have to say, this is miles better!! About 2 to 2.5 hrs battery life as well, and the wi-fi connection is robust and reliable.
I use this for work, and on the train - it is so compact and portable, I never plan to lug a full-size laptop around in my briefcase/rucksack again!!
Overall, an excellent, well-designed product with huge potential, and priced VERY competitively. Highly recommended
