Acer V193Ab: a good buy for the price4
After trying several standard ratio monitors that were either unavailable or unusable, this one came as a pleasant relief.

The device runs at plug-and-play on Vista without problems, no driver installation required. Auto configuration brings brightness down to a reasonable level, and angle of view is fair [ie. not as good as a CRT, but at least you don't have to sit rigid to avoid the edge of the screen burning out].

Colour as usual is set too blue, especially for black & white images, but you can achieve something near a neutral grey by fiddling with the controls. Menus are no more awkward than most, though it's not helpful that the buttons are black on black and nearly invisible. Software for fine calibration supplied on disk doesn't seem to achieve a lot.

Native resolution is 1280 x 1024, but 1024 x 768 works perfectly well. Screen size is 37.6 x 30.1 cm, roughly 14.75 x 11.75 ins, which gives about 18% more viewing area than a 19" widescreen, for a smaller desk footprint. I didn't buy it to watch DVDs, but they play satisfactorily - though the 'movie' preset is so horrible you're better leaving the display on standard.

No DVI or speakers on this model, they come extra. The description on Amazon claims the stand swivels: it doesn't, but it's hard to see why you would need it to. No height adjustment either, but the angle of view is good enough that you don't have to prop the thing up on books.

For a budget model I'm pretty happy with this. The supplier [SHD Online] delivered the goods at standard carriage the day after the order; no complaints there.
