A great world war 2 adventure5
In 1942 Libya, a mixed bag of allied straglers defends a oasis against more than 500 Germans. James Belushi steps ably in to Humphrey Bogart's shoes in this effective remake of a classic 1943 war movie. Belushi's authentic and distinctive Grant tank, the sundry sweaty uniforms and the splendid desert locations give the story real power. The supporting actors, including Mark Lee, also play their roles with conviction - even if their assorted accents (britsh, french, american) do

sometimes wobble alarmingly Eminently watchable.

Worth it for the kit alone5
Why the hell has this not been released on DVD? This admirable remake is an action packed eye-opener. If you love your authentic WW2 militaria/kit, then this is the movie for you. From the M3 Grant tank to the small arms, it's all on show. Belushi is in good form, as are the other main actors. The only really cringeworthy bit is the German CO's naff wooden accident (- at times the posh English actor seems to forget to put on the accent!). Don't bother trying to count the bodycount either: the squareheads are mown down by the dozen. That said, there are plenty of touching moments in this film. The director has tried to capture the 1940's spirit well and the final 'at the going down of the sun' remembrance speech shows that this film was made for all the right reasons. Once again, like the amazing Operation Daybreak, it's a mystery why it has not been released on DVD...

Very entertaining5
I first saw this film on TV and, although some of it is unintentionally funny, it is a strangely compelling film the more you watch it. James Balushi is excellent as Sgt Gunn. Parts of the dialogue sound a bit amateurish (especially the part where 'Frenchie' is describing his cheese-making activities!) but with its 'Zulu' theme of a few standing against many, you can't help but like it and find yourself rooting for the handful of allies faced with overwhelming German attacks. Give it a try, you'll defintely find it entertaining one way or another!
