HAUNTING EAR CANDY5
It's so hard to pick a favourite CHURCH album, they've given us such a mouth-watering embarassment of riches over the years. STARFISH, HEYDAY, GOLD AFTERNOON FIX, AFTER EVEYTHING NOW THIS, UNINVITED LIKE THE CLOUDS.
This 1982-1990 best of is a great introduction to the band (who along with THE GO-BETWEENS & THE KANGAROO, should be AUSTRALIAN national treasures).
Led by STEVE KILBEY'S deadpan, deep and melancholy vocals, THE CHURCH occupy a none too often explored musical landscape. A brand of guitar pop that is part psychedelic, hauntingly atmospheric, dark, otherworldly and surreal. An enticingly rich, sophisticated, lush and multi layered concoction that over the years has become THE CHURCHES forte. Blissful, spellbinding musical passages to lose yourself in.
They can rock with the best too. THE UNGUARDED MOMENT, MYRRH, TANTALISED, REPTILE, METROPOLIS and YOU'RE STILL BEAUTIFUL are world beating examples of euphoric rickenbacker heaven, the twin guitars of MARTY WILSON PIPER and PETER KOPPES weaving, winding and gliding along to dramatic perfection.
On their most well known track, the astounding, sublime UNDER THE MILKY WAY(which made the US billboard charts. Hang your heads in shame cool britannia!!!) they achieve the impossible and make bagpipes sound good.
Still going in 2008 they are still, bewilderingly unknown.
Compared to another band who started at the same time, the smug, cliched, bombastic clunkers U2, I know who I couldn't live without and it ai'nt BONGO & the boys.

The Church Is The World's Most Unheralded Supergroup !5
It is amazing that I am the first person to rate the Best Of The Church. This compilation CD accentuates the Church's 1980-1990 era when they were a great band with dreamy vocals and mesmerizing instrumentals to augment the lead singer, Steve Kilbey. The songs "Under The Milky Way" and "Metropolis" gave the CHurch some merited international fame. From 1994 through 2007, The Church has released glorious, peerless, chilling and far-out music that rivals U2, Pink Floyd, Radiohead and the legendary Byrds. For some horrible reason, the media forgot about The Church. They have a vocalist and lyricist who surpasses Thom Yorke and Bono. Furthermore, their trippy and atmospheric music is comparable to Pink Floyd and Radiohead's creative soundscapes. The Church are incredibly talented, visionary and profound. It's not too late to Discover this supergroup and their dynamic lead vocalist, Steve Kilbey. If these Aussies were based in London they would be huge superstars.
