Album Description
Originally released in the States in 2003, this is the album that preceded Devon Sproule's successful 'Keep Your Silver Shined' album - previously unavailable here and now re-issued by Tin Angel Records.
'Upstate Songs' really marked the flowering of Devon's songwriting - a dramatic leap into truly memorable, engaging, and quality songwriting, in a direct and elegant no-frills recording that fully showcases the remarkable guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Devon is.
Gentle, poetic, classy, and achingly gorgeous, 'Upstate Songs' is the chronicle of Sproule's pilgrimage to upstate New York from her home in Virginia and cycles through the subtle dynamics of two acoustic guitars, played skillfully by Sproule and co-producer Paul Curreri.
'Upstate Songs' is an honest, well-crafted, and effortlessly played album that exudes timelessness.
Customer Reviews
Timely Reissue of Devon's Excellent Album From '03.
I saw this artist on "Later" and was immediately struck by her talent, charm and, of course, the quality of her songs. I got her brilliant "Keep Your Silver Shined" album, which features the songs she'd played on the show, and an import copy of this album at the same time.
Originally released in 2003 this album made it into Rolling Stone's Critics Top Albums of that year. Believe it or not this is Devon Sproule's third album(although the first two were released under the name "Devon"), which makes "Keep Your Silver Shined" her Fourth.
This is a high quality album and quite different to KYSS(nice acronym!) it might be said to be a more straight forward singer-songwriter effort than her most recent work. The opening track had me hooked on a first play(it is as good as anything she has recorded to date)and the album as a whole is a real grower. Most of the songs are guitar and voice with occasional backing from her husband(Paul Curreri)but 'Should Have Been Snow' features a full band and is surprisingly rock(ish).
If you are new to this artist I would suggest starting with KYSS as I feel it is more consistent, vibrant and just plain different to pretty much anything else around, it also shows that this artist is still getting better(a good thing surely)but if you like that one as much I think you will, you'll be getting this one not too long after.
She deserve a wider audience Devon Sproule
I went to see a Richie Havens gig, the lights dimmed and everyone waited in anticipation of the great man appearing, instead this diminutive lady walked on stage in a red plaid dress, with a guitar that seemed almost as big as she was. She tuned her guitar a bit and then launched into "My Baby Just Cares for Me", 30 minuted later she went off to thunderous appaulse having won the audience over with her idosincratic style and haunting voice. Come the break my friend and I immediatley ventured into the foyer where we purchased her CD and spoke with this charming and polite young lady. Make her a star! Buy her CD.
