The Ruy Lopez is incredibly common at all levels of chess, and everyone who plays 1 e4 e5 as Black needs to have a reliable antidote to this powerful opening. In this book, Grandmaster and Lopez expert Milos Pavlovic provides the answer. Drawing upon his many years of experience facing the Lopez, Pavlovic devises a sound and yet ambitious repertoire for Black, the basis of which is provided by the legendary and ever-popular Marshall Attack. The Marshall is a perfect weapon, as it avoids passive positions and the so-called 'Spanish torture' of many other variations. Furthermore, Black's tactical and positional objectives are usually clear-cut, and often involve a plan of direct attack against the white king. Features include: a complete repertoire against the Ruy Lopez; covers the typical plans for both sides; emphasizes crucial tactical ideas; and, packed with original analysis. Milos Pavlovic is a Serbian Grandmaster and a former Yugoslav Champion. He has enjoyed many tournament successes and has represented his country on numerous occasions. He's a renowned trainer who has worked with many top players, and he's written for worldwide publications such as "Chess Informant" and "New in Chess".

Customer Reviews
Excellent new opening book
This new book on the Marshall is excellent. And a new book was necessary, since the last good book on this opening was published 20 years ago (Nunn/Harding). Don't waste your money on the 2003 book by B.Lalic, since that was a dreadful error ridden volume
First of all this book provides the reader with a complete repertoire against 1.e4, based on the Spanish opening. It's backbone is the Marshall attack were black sacrifices a pawn for an initiative against the white king and other compensation. This variation is very tactical and is frequently employed by grandmasters.
And tactical opening means there are lots of (relatively) long (semi) forced variations. Nevertheless the author has succeeded in pruning these variations to what is essential and providing good verbal guidance as to tactical motives.
Who can benefit from this book?. As mentioned above this is a tactical opening, and you need a certain level of tactical ability to play Pavlovic's repertoire successfully. So I would hesitate to recommend it if your playing strength is below that of an average club player.
That is, unless of course you have the ambition to study chess more or less seriously and improve your strength rapidly :-).
