Customer Reviews
The best book for refreshing those navigation skills.
This book suits those who are about to take the RYA Day Skipper theory or practical tests.
Wouldn't it be nice if you could see the kind of questions the RYA asks candidates to solve? Well this book covers most of them, and also includes the answers so you can check your work.
If you need to brush up your coastal navigation skills before you set sail, this book will give you the confidence you need to pass that course. It even comes complete with a practice chart. This is no theory book, this is hands-on stuff.
It covers all of the required syllabus, from three-point fixes right upto passage planning.
The book includes extracts from several nautical almanacs so that tides can be calculated and passages planned safely. You don't need any other reference material. The questions are realistic to make you think, and the free chart encourages you to shape a course in pencil.
You can check your pencil marks on the chart against the full-size photographs in the book. If they are identical, you know you are correct.
Finally, this book is useful to those who have already taken the RYA test but are occasional sailors. If you feel your skills are becoming rusty due to lack of use, then try solving some of the questions. Sharpen up your 2B pencils and shape some courses. Your skills will be refreshed in no time and your confidence will soar.
EXCELLENT PRACTICE EXERCISES THAT SUPPORT THE RYA COUSE WELL
THE BOOK CONTAINS EXTENSIVE AND QUITE INVOLVED EXERCISES THAT THE ARE ESSENTIAL IN BUILBING CONFIDENCE. IF I HAD ONE CRITICISM, I WOULD HAVE APPRECIATED SOME GREATER DETAIL IN EXPLAINING SOME OF THE ANSWERS. BUT IT HAS GREATLY HELPED ME, A TRUE NOVICE, IN LEARNING SOME OF THE SKILLS FOR MY COURSE.
Not polished
I was initially quite happy with this book but after working through some of the tests there are a few typos that are extremely frustrating. In addition the answers for the test papers were not well explained.
One other small gripe ... The book advertises a "Free Practice Chart". It's not free, you need it to do the exercises in the book so it's clearly part of what you are paying for. The charts are only black and white whereas your exam charts will be in colour, as charts are.
Overall I was dissapointed, the RYA do a much better book with proper practice charts.
