Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover
Do you find the Rule of the Road impossible to learn ?

Are you one of those people who doze off at the sound of the magic words "Not Under Command"?

Are your crew beginning to suspect the truth: that navigation lights look like so many fairy lights to you, that you don′t really know what a northern cardinal buoy looks like, and that your considered response to a crossing situation is to panic ?  Do you see them furtively studying the ferry timetables when they think you′re not looking ?

This book is designed to make learning the Rule of the Road enjoyable.  It is packed with anecdotes, mnemonics, colour diagrams and advice and is written is straightforward English for ordinary yachtsmen – sail or power, European or American.  The world′s waterways are busier than ever and are no place for the uninformed: you need to understand what is going on around you and you need to be able to make the right decisions.  Understanding the Rule of the Road will help you do just this.

About the Author
Paul Boissier is a brilliant new writer to hit the nautical scene.  He has the ideal background to write this book: he is a small boat sailor and has also captained large ships.

He joined the Navy to go to sea and, with the reception of a short break to learn how to brew Guinness, he has remained on or around the sea ever since.  A professional navigator, he has travelled to most parts of the world during his career, commanding two submarines and a frigate.  Until recently, he was in charge of Portsmouth Naval Bast – a post that includes the custody of the Eastern Solent.

He is an enthusiastic yachtsman who can think of no better way of spending a weekend than drifting around in his boat, Snow Goose.

Customer Reviews

humorous and insightful - not just the same old rules5
Boissier is clever, spelling out the rules with humour and respect for the reader's intelligence, but without missing any of the important exceptions and details that are buried deep in the smallprint in the official versions.

His self tests are rigorous too, should help push up the marks nicely.

Clever tips5
Whilst informative what makes this book stand out (in what could be quite a dry subject) is that it is very readable and engaging. It also had very clever ways to remember the rules. He enhances the book with andecotes from his time at sea. A must if you are planning to take any RYA exams.
