A comprehensive set of award-winning tools, Norton Internet Security automatically blocks hackers, viruses, and spyware. It filters out dangerous phishing email and annoying spam, while its powerful firewall gives you full control over incoming and outgoing Internet traffic. Privacy controls protect your personal information and parental controls give you the power to block unsavory Web sites and shield your children from harm on the Internet. And should your operating system or browser have a security hole, Norton Internet Security is there to handle resulting attacks.

More powerful than ever, Norton Internet Security 2006 is also faster, smarter, and easier to use. With Norton Protection Center--a one-look control panel for all your security tools--you can review your security situation and lock down your system with an optimal security configuration. You can also run a system-wide security scan at any time with the click of a button. With all these tools working for you, you're free to get connected, stay connected, and use the Internet however you want.

What's new and improved:

Stronger Security and Data Protection
With Norton Security Console and Norton Security Inspector, customers have a simple and easy way to view browser security settings, Windows password strength, and risks within hidden shared folders, as well as unneeded services. Simplified fix and undo functions make it easy for anyone to use, even if they have limited computer knowledge. Less User Interaction Required
With its smart learning feature, Norton Internet Security 2006 improves its out-of-thebox protection.

  • The application learn mode function requires less interaction during installation by finding and automatically configuring the firewall so that customers can continue to use all of their favorite software without being constantly interrupted with security questions.
  • Firewall alerts deliver a more streamlined experience by informing the user of the threat level an application represents when connecting to the Internet.

    Adaptive Personalized Protection
The new Norton Protection Center is a common console that automatically/dynamically tailors itself to an individual user's preferences, behavior and environment to provide a personalized view of their computer protection status.

    Makes me feel insecure!1
I wish I had read all the reviews before buying this product. I am about to uninstall it, since it has slowed down my computer and keeps displaying error messages. Makes me feel insecure! Technical support has been rather useless. I have always used Norton before and been happy with it, but this edition is not to be recommended.

Up to Norton’s usual high standard.4
I have installed this on both my Windows XP Media Centre PC and my laptop running Windows XP Professional without any problems and both machines showed a perfect bill of health when checked with Norton's on line Security Check.

There is no doubt it is a little lacking in spyware protection, but it is generally acknowledged that no one spyware checker is sufficient, it is usually recommended one regularly runs Ad-Aware, Spybot and Micrososft Anti-Spyware, these are all free.

Another excellent precaution is to use the free version of Privacy Guardian that removes all cookies and Internet Temporary files on boot up.

Having used McAfee for the past two years I feel quite as secure with Norton at nearly half the price.

An embarrassment for Norton / Symantec !2
Norton / Symantec are well known for their years of good service and products, until now that is ! Norton Internet Security 2006 is a real pain to install and is frustratingly slow once working. It took me, an experienced computer user, over two hours to install and remedy the fatal error that decided to appear up to 30 minutes after I had first placed the CD into my sisters PC.

I find it quite amazing, that this product wasn't properly tested before it's release. The main problem arises when it tries to uninstall a previous version of NIS. Rather than make a user ferret around on their Support page trying to download and run a tool to remedy problem that runs through ActiveX, only to fail on a certain amount of machines, forcing the user to go through three steps in order to get things working again ! For a novice, it's a NIGHTMARE ! Only a tolerant, experienced user would be able to get things running and working again.

Finally, once the product is running, it does tend to hog the system resources somewhat. It must of been a challenge for the programmers to code a set of utilities that has to constantly change over last few years. I can understand that.

I gave this product only two stars, for the popularity of the product, company and it's half price tag. The price is quite deceptive against the possible problems you may encounter installing and using NIS 2006.

Choose carefully against other products available, the power of choice is there. But most important, be patient and get an experienced user to help out if problems occur.
