Synopsis
The border collie is Britain's favourite breed of pet dog. The author concentrates on various aspects of training the canine "super brain".
From the Inside Flap
The Border Collie stands out as the most versatile of all breeds, combining brains and beauty with a biddable temperament and a strong desire to work. In this Book of the Breed, the author looks at all the areas of activity where the Border Collie excels - Sheepdog Trials, Obedience, Agility and Flyball - and gives the benefit of her unparalleled experience to show how the Border Collie can be trained to achieve its full potential. Whether you want a working dog, a top-class competitor, or a well-behaved companion who will fit in with your lifestyle, this book will tell you all you need to know.
About the Author
Born on the edge of the Pennines, Barbara Swann has been surrounded by Border Collies all her life, and she has been actively involved with the breed for some forty years. She is a highly respected dog trainer and has been a Kennel Club Obedience judge for many years, as well as awarding Challenge Certificates in the breed. A successful competitor in the Working Trials and Sheepdog Trials, Barbara is much in demand as a judge in this sphere of activity. She is an instructor of sheepdog training and specialises in correcting faults. Barbara has spent some time in the USA and Canada, and has considerable experience of the Border Collie at work and in competition in these countries. She spent some time at a dog training school in Canada and has adopted some of the training programmes for her own dogs. She has been involved in agility competition for many years and was instrumental in introducing flyball to Britain. Barbara was one of the first members of both the Border Collie Club of Great Britain and the Southern Border Collie Club, and she was a founder member of the Midlands Border Collie Club.
Customer Reviews
Must have book for any Border Collie owner
This book gives extensive information relating to all aspects of owning a Border Collie. I recommend Ms. Swann's puppy and problem training for any breed of dog. It has really helped me
raise excellent dogs! Her method is a no nonsense approach to
getting it right with firm consistency and loving rewards. A truly great book.
The Complete Border Collie
Very informative answers most of the things I wanted to know. This book is worth having preferably before you buy a Border Collie. My 7 year old collie wishes I had got the book before our new pup as the item on introducing pup to older dog read before hand might have prevented him getting into bother.A few name suggestions would have been great.
First class guide to the sometimes difficult border collie
This is a first class book. A readable book from cover to cover and also an excellent reference book for the shelf. It covers, in simple detail, all the important aspects of the border collie. Collies are stubborn breed of dog that presents the novice with a real challenge. This publication provides the means to and end. From simple puppy care to showing the adult dog. An excellent book - only 4 stars because I could have read more and more - probably because the style of Ms Swann was compelling.
