Editorial Reviews

CD Description
LUNAPARK marked the debut of former Galaxie 500 frontman Dean Wareham's new band Luna. Like Galaxie 500, Luna brims with chiming guitars, surging backbeats, and Wareham's high, droning vocals. But Luna also boasts sharper songcraft, with an emphasis on memorable hooks, and a cohesiveness in the playing that was sometimes missing from Galaxie 500's drifting,DIY aesthetic. The latter is due, in part, to the presence of ex-Chills bassist Justin Harwood and ex-Feelies drummer Stanley Demeski who bring a tightness and focus to Wareham's pop-minded tunes.
The album's opener, "Slide", is a drowsy, down-tempo tune that highlights Wareham's Muppet-like voice and the group's oft-used three-chord song structure. But it also proves Luna's facility with texture, and its penchant for building lush cushions of sound from overlapping guitars, melodic bass lines, and crisp drumming. The countrified "Crazy People" and the pulsing "Slash Your Tires" push and expand the formula. Wareham's cryptic lyrics and seemingly ironic vocal style create a sense of detachment, making a satisfying tension with the clean, bread-and-butter music, especially on more hook-filled tunes like "I Can't Wait". With its mix of fine songwriting and attention to rock's subtle, dreamy overtones, LUNAPARK is the first in a series of Luna's accomplished albums.

Customer Reviews

Dean Wareham after Galaxie 5005
Dean's wonderful voice makes this album. We were all sad when Galaxie split up, but then we got 2 great bands Luna and Damon&Naomi. This first album by Luna, has a harder edge than Galaxie 500 but the tunes are still there. I want everything was produced as a movie soundtrack and is just gorgeous...if you love Galaxie 500 this is a must for you...buy it now!
