Imagine J. Mascis without the angst. Imagine the Velvets' "Sweet Jane" played on an antique turntable stuck on 16 rpm. This is the sound of Galaxie 500. Many other bands have appeared in their wake to continue the band's style of soft-spoken minimalist guitar-gloom, including Belle and Sebastian, and the Magnetic Fields. Galaxie 500's career was a short one, and most of their fans have come to love the band posthumously. THE PORTABLE GALAXIE 500 samples the best of three years' worth of releases.
This compilation includes "Strange", which portrays the unresolved alienation which the indie generation inherited from the post-punk era, as well as "When Will You Come Home" and the ever-powerful "Listen, the Snow is Falling". THE PORTABLE GALAXIE 500 is by no means a comprehensive sampling of the band's repertoire--nothing short of their full catalogue can faithfully represent their brief, sad genius--but it's certainly a good start.

A Portable Compilation
This compilation draws mainly from their 3 studio albums, a live rendition of "Summertime" from thier live album Copenhagen and a different version of "Blue Thunder" from the rarities album Uncollected. Skimpy as it may look but it does give you an overall view from this influential ambient rock band.
